The Km.0 and del Sol fairs are held this weekend in Vecindario

Maspalomas24h Monday, September 12, 2022

Both meetings will be held simultaneously on Avenida de Canarias on September 17 and 18

The Commonwealth of the Southeast expects the attendance of between 15.000 and 20.000 people during the weekend

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, and the three mayors of the municipalities that make up the Commonwealth of the Southeast of Gran Canaria, Francisco García, Óscar Hernández and Ana Hernández, today presented the Km.0 Gran Canaria – Sureste Fair and the Feria del Sol, which will be held simultaneously on Avenida de Canarias in Vecindario on September 17 and 18.

Antonio Morales highlighted the celebration of these two “cutting edge initiatives”, which “today more than ever are necessary to provide an outlet for two strategic sectors for the island”, such as energy and the agri-food sector. He considered that these two fairs “are essential to open channels and give possibilities to the sectors involved, but also to raise awareness of a fact that we should not avoid,” said the president.

And the fact is that “we are going through a difficult European situation, with a war, a food crisis, a climate crisis, etc. and initiatives like these help to break dependence on the outside”, reaffirming the eco-island proposal promoted by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria in defense of energy, food and water sovereignty.

For his part, Francisco García, president of the Commonwealth of the Southeast of Gran Canaria and mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the municipality that hosts both fairs, highlighted the importance of jointly celebrating the km.0 and del Sol Fairs, to “enhance the work of the farmers and ranchers of the region, but also of the landscape and tourism.”

The Commonwealth of the Southeast expects that this weekend between 15.000 and 20.000 people will attend, from 9.00:15.00 a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m., to the Plaza de Los Algodoneros and the Avenida de Canarias de Vecindario to see first-hand what fifty farmers from Agüimes grow. , Ingenio and Santa Lucía, which will offer the public honey, salt from the Salinas de Tenefé, cheese, pastries, bread, and many other products from the area.

The Fair, which is held in a traveling manner throughout all the municipalities of the island, seeks to boost the local economy by promoting the consumption of local products, but also to encourage behaviors that help sustainability through consumption and support those who with their daily work help preserve the landscape.

It is a way to make visible the work carried out by the region's producers, said Francisco García, "many of them recognized at the island and regional level for the quality of the products they offer."

For the president of the Cabildo, supporting the agri-food sector and km 0 is to promote healthier eating, but also the protection of the territory and the landscape, "because it contributes to the fight against fires", and the reduction of the ecological footprint, among other benefits.
On the other hand, the Feria del Sol returns to the Southeast as a reference meeting point for the clean energy sector in the Canary Islands, a sector that the Commonwealth of the Southeast of Gran Canaria has always supported.

This year there will be 20 stands of professionals and companies that will show their products and services to the public. In short, “we will discover the advances in clean energy, which generate a much smaller ecological footprint, taking advantage of the fact that in the region we have resources such as the wind and the sun,” added the president of the Commonwealth.

“It is absolutely essential that we advance in energy and food sovereignty, in the diversification of a sustainable economy based on innovation, the circular economy, etc.,” added Antonio Morales, who defended this model as the ideal solution “for Gran Canaria "I don't have to depend on the outside."
