53 companies certify their commitment to tourism sustainability through Biosphere and Tourism of Gran Canaria

The Anamar Suites, Bull Dorado Beach & Spa and H10 Playa Meloneras Palace hotels have already passed the requirements to achieve recognition of their good practices and hold their Biosphere certification

 

The commitment of the main destinations to sustainability, the environment and the quality of their accommodation offer has become a decisive element in the reactivation of the tourism industry after the pandemic. The client now prioritizes establishments and a vacation experience with a low carbon footprint and, for the moment, there are already 53 companies in Gran Canaria that have joined the Biosphere and Tourism of Gran Canaria initiative and, therefore, They are in the process of processing their personalized business sustainability plans. 

 

Of the companies that already benefit from this line of participation, and therefore have exceeded the requirements, are the Anamar Suites, Bull Dorado Beach & Spa and H10 Playa Meloneras Palace hotels. These have achieved recognition for their good practices and hold their Biosphere certification to demonstrate their environmental action to potential clients. 

 

“Gran Canaria has a plan that involves having a sustainable destination, diversifying our offer and also facing a necessary digitalization,” he assured. Carlos Alamo, Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. “The important thing is that we must be aware that we are facing a notable opportunity that must be taken advantage of. The counselor explained that the process, called Gran Canaria Biosphere Destination, requires the involvement of the entire Gran Canaria society, especially the business sector of the island's tourism industry. To make it easier for companies to transform their management towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices, Turismo de Gran Canaria maintains active adherence to the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle program. Gran Canaria's sustainability strategy contemplates its three fundamental axes, environmental, economic and social, with actions that address the transversality of the concept. Since last year 2021, Gran Canaria has been part of the Biosphere Destination Community promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an entity that certifies the efforts made to align the tourism model with the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Goals of United Nations Sustainable Development. 

 

With this program, and through the support of the ITR team of professionals, the destination involves the island's business fabric in the use of digital tools that promote more sustainable management models, also offering the opportunity to value and certify its good practices. practices. The platform consists of intuitive and easy-to-use software for managing business sustainability from which interested companies can benefit, as well as access a certification system that is based on a set of simple standards that establish specific objectives. , identifiable and measurable. This is an opportunity to contribute with concrete actions to the change of model for which we have been working in our destination and with which to contribute to its revaluation and differentiation. This purpose results in an increase in competitiveness, while improving the tourist experience and the quality of life of residents.

 

On the other hand, Gran Canaria Tourism has launched a communication action on the news website specialized in the professional tourism sector Hosteltur to promote the participation of companies in the progress towards more sustainable tourism. The destination is carrying out intense work to highlight the importance of sustainability as a tourist attraction for the destination, already converted into a new resource that acts as a driving force in the tourism industry.

With this project, the Gran Canaria destination highlights its commitment to environmental, socio-cultural and territorial management values, working on an action plan directly connected to the SDGs and the 169 UN goals. The implementation of this plan aims to obtain the Biosphere Certified Destination certification, which internationally recognizes good practices in responsible tourism.

Among the sustainable initiatives being developed by the Gran Canaria companies participating in the program, the implementation of recycling systems in private facilities, the use of energy-efficient lighting, the prioritization of the hiring of local personnel, as well as the offer of periodic training for employees, stand out. employees.
