The General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea has authorized the operation of seasonal beach services in Puerto Rico to the Mogán City Council. This permit came into effect yesterday, Tuesday, September 20, but the previous concessionaire entity, Puerto Rico SA, has not yet removed its hammocks and umbrellas. The Moganero City Council is waiting for this to happen in order to immediately begin the municipal management of seasonal services.
The Mogán City Council requested authorization to operate seasonal services after Costas signed the act of reversion of the beach to Puerto Rico SA on November 24. The private entity's permit actually expired in 2018, but it was not until 2020 when Costas denied an extension of that concession. However, Puerto Rico SA stopped the reversal with an appeal before the Contentious-Administrative Chamber requesting the application of precautionary measures, which were denied on October 28, 2021. Puerto Rico SA then filed an appeal for reconsideration against this order. , which was finally dismissed on July 5.
Now the permit to manage seasonal services is in the hands of the City Council, which has the sunbeds and umbrellas for installation as soon as Puerto Rico SA removes the ones it still has on the beach today. The City Council has 820 sunbeds and 410 umbrellas, which will be distributed in three sectors: two on the sandy area and one on the side breakwater of the beach.
The local Moganera Administration is putting out to tender a rescue and toilet module – male, female and PMR. However, it already has two lifeguards for this beach and has rented a temporary toilet module to offer this service until the permanent one is installed, expectedly in about two months. Regarding sports services – rental of skates, kayak and paddle surf – the City Council is putting out to tender the contract so that its management can be carried out by a specialized private company, hoping that these can be operational again in a month and a half.
The Consistory holds the permit for the exploitation of seasonal services until April 30, 2023, but intends to request a concession from the Canary Coast demarcation for another four years. The request will be made next December, well in advance of the expiration date of the authorization now in force.
Puerto Rico thus joins the other beaches in the municipality that have been managed directly by the Mogán City Council since May. These are Las Marañuelas, Costa Alegre, El Perchel, Patalavaca, Aquamarina, El Cura, Taurito and Mogán, where Costas has authorized their exploitation until 2026.
