Storm Hermine causes heavy rain and numerous road closures in Gran Canaria

Since early Saturday morning, Tropical Storm Hermine has caused heavy rainfall. At 12:00 p.m., up to 90 liters per square meter had been collected in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and more than 100 liters had been collected in midland and peak areas.

Most of the incidents are occurring on the road network, where there have been numerous road closures. At this time, the following roads are closed: the GC-200 (Agaete-El Risco highway), the GC-210 (Artenara), the GC-310 (La Calzada), the GC-231 (the one that connects Agaete with the Valle), the GC-231 (access to the Sao), and the GC-800 (Marzagán). Additionally, at approximately 12:30, an accident occurred due to landslides on GC-2, at the height of the tunnels located before the Barranco de Moya.

“During the entire early morning and morning of this Sunday it has been raining throughout the island territory. Right now we are probably experiencing the most critical moment. The rain exceeds 120 liters in the Artenara area, which is good news because it is sending water to the dams. The incidents are generally minor, especially landslides and some road closures. Right now there is a deployment of almost 1.000 people throughout the island to minimize the damage,” explained the president of the Cabildo, Antonio Morales.

The Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium Consorcio has had to intervene in traffic accidents, without consequences, and the majority of its interventions consist of technical assistance for bailing, removal of risk elements and incidents in electrical panels.

The Gran Canaria Cabildo insists on asking the population not to go out unless it is essential since concentrations of rain with possible intense discharges are expected for this afternoon and life-threatening incidents can overwhelm the security services. and emergencies.
