The mayors showed the counselor the pruning shredder that she has had since last March

The counselor valued the “community work” carried out by the entity to achieve “a circular economy and greater sustainability for our agriculture.”

The mayors of Santa Lucía, Ingenio and Agüimes, Francisco García, Ana Hernández and Óscar Hernández, received today the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoosteende, to show her the water cycle that develops in the Commonwealth and present the initiatives it develops to meet the needs of the agricultural and livestock sector of the Region.

Among them, the municipalities that make up the Commonwealth jointly manage the crushing of prunings. To do this, since last March, it has had a plant waste shredder that shreds more than 250.000 cubic meters of bushes and tree remains, an amount three times greater than what the previous machine managed to break down.

After showing the counselor the machine in operation, the president of the Commonwealth of the Southeast and mayor of Santa Lucía, Francisco García, highlighted the benefits of this tool: on the one hand, delivering the crushed remains to the ranchers so that they can use them as chaff for the cows' beds and, on the other hand, generate compost that is delivered to farmers in the southeast to fertilize their crops and to municipalities for use in the gardening of municipal public spaces.

Compost is a “high-quality and high-value product to be able to fertilize our farmers' farms, at a complex time of extra costs for inputs in the agricultural and livestock sector,” said the counselor after seeing the machine at full capacity. In that sense, he assured that "all the actions we can do in the Canary Islands to be able to have our own fertilizers and our own feed for livestock is very positive." Vanoosteende highlighted the actions carried out by the municipalities of the southeast to achieve "an economy circular and greater sustainability for our agriculture and the environment.” The objective of the Government of the Canary Islands and entities such as the Commonwealth of the Southeast is to achieve “that self-sufficiency so as not to depend on the outside and the ups and downs of the economy or the possible external issues that affect us and that mean an increase in prices for our producers. ”he explained.

Collaborative work success

On the other hand, the Minister of Agriculture highlighted “the community work” of the southeastern municipalities, “which have been working for years in this Commonwealth that has achieved so much success in this collaborative work.”

Proof of this is this crusher that can also be moved to each of the municipalities according to their needs, since it has a loading crane, an unloading belt, a road cart approved to travel at 80 kilometers per hour, a magnetic roller for metals. and an engine located on a trailer, which allows all work to be done with the same machine.

The entity invested nearly 290.000 euros in this machine to meet the needs of the municipalities of the Southeast.
