“Whoever is governing in each municipality, this Commonwealth already has an important root and is not going to decline,” said the new president.
The mayor of Ingenio assures that the entity will continue working “in the line of continuing to improve the quality of life of the population of the three municipalities”
The mayor of Ingenio, Ana Hernández, today took possession of the rotating presidency of the Commonwealth of Southeast Gran Canaria, a responsibility that she assumes “with pride, desire and strength”, because she “firmly” believes in the entity and in that “the collaboration of the three municipalities has been important in the last 32 years for the region to have grown.”
The newly appointed president, who takes charge of the responsibility of the Commonwealth from the mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, recalled that the decisions that are adopted within the Commonwealth are made unanimously by the three mayors. .
For Hernández, who takes office for the second time since she became mayor of Ingenio, “the important thing is that, whoever is governing in each municipality, this Commonwealth already has an important root and is not going to decline.”
In that sense, he advocated continuing to generate projects that make the three municipalities continue to grow in the well-being and sustainability of the more than 150.000 inhabitants served by the Commonwealth of the Southeast.
The president recalled that the collaboration between the three towns began thanks to the joint work that began 32 years ago to generate water for the three municipalities, an objective that "today has already been achieved." For this reason, “we have to modify the statutes to continue advancing in many other projects that we have in mind,” she stated.
Upcoming challenges
In general terms, the Commonwealth will continue working “to continue improving the quality of life of the population of the three municipalities,” said Ana Hernández.
Among the more short-term projects that the new president will have to take charge of are, for example, the tender for urban waste collection, whose 10-year contract will be awarded shortly. As the new first vice president and president of the Contracting Board, the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, will be responsible for completing this file.
In addition, the entity will continue trying to promote the Arinaga Megaturbinas project for the installation of a self-consumption wind turbine in the Port of Arinaga, which will make it possible to “continue taking advantage of the wind and the sun to make the desalination and treatment plant one hundred percent sustainable.” said the mayor. This wind turbine will produce nearly 16 million kilowatts per hour, which will allow the Commonwealth of the Southeast to complete the integral water cycle and reduce the consumption of the treatment plant and desalination plant managed by the entity and that supplies the three municipalities of the Region.
On the other hand, the new president of the Commonwealth announced that the entity is already working on an Employment Plan that will be launched in the coming months in collaboration with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Canarian Employment Service. With an investment of almost two million euros, this initiative will allow residents of the three municipalities to be trained and hired to eliminate the remains of abandoned greenhouses in the region. Specifically, the workforce hired thanks to this plan will be made up of 25% residents of Ingenio, 25% of Agüimes and 50% of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, as it is the most populated municipality.
This Employment Plan is currently in the drafting phase of the project, and it is expected that it can begin to be developed by the beginning of next year.
