Canaries against foreigners: Yumbo and Oasis fight for the gay business

There is a business of 100.000 euros in one day. The companies that organize events for the LGBT market in the south of Gran Canaria are fighting for control of the cash generated by the gay tourism business in winter. Thus, the owners of rental premises in the Yumbo shopping center and those in the Oasis shopping center have asked the Tirajana city council to get in the middle and arbitrate a solution as long as they are interested. The foreigners behind Winter Pride maintain that the events scheduled in one week will generate a business of 50 million euros for the sector. That means a high source of income for the Tax Agency and Social Security. The Canarians came, they maintain, before to organize a specialized event for that market on November 11.

It all comes down to the melon of the gay business, which clashes in dates and each one wants to have their market segment well tied. Those from the Oasis, who are mostly Canarian, want their German carnival every November to stay in their area of influence. While the foreigners who control the financial activity in Yumbo claim to be a welcoming umbrella for all types of initiatives that add to their Ebitda.

Winter Pride takes place between November 7 and 13. On November 11 there is a parade in the Yumbo orbit and in the Oasis, on that same day after four decades, the famous German carnival of Maspalomas takes place coinciding with that of Cologne. That November 11 at the Oasis, 100.000 euros are generated and it is one of the few dates of the year where that business community has some activity with the gay economic power of the south of Gran Canaria.
