Nueva Canarias has set itself the challenge for the elections of May 28, 2023, to overcome the polarization of the vote between PP and PSOE, who want to turn the process into the prelude to general elections scheduled for 2024. In September of this 2022 Samuel Henríquez stated that "if Marco Aurelio had dignity, his return would not be considered." And that is the equation that AV-PP currently refuses to clear up in an attempt to maintain control of the agenda. The south of Gran Canaria is much more polarized with respect to identity issues (ideological or territorial) than with respect to specific public policies to the point that at the moment there are 7 municipal candidates: Vox, AV-PP, PSOE, NC, CC, Unidos and AH given that little is known about the Podemos communists.
In February 2023, the pact between PSOE and NC has to put the 2023 budgets to a vote, the last cartridge before starting to go corner to corner to take advantage of those accounts in the form of votes. But it is one thing to manage 91,3 million euros and another thing to know the electoral mathematics of the neighborhoods. NC will try to be necessary for local governance and even prevent a pact between AV-PP and PSOE.
In the south of Gran Canaria, emotional and ideological polarization has been growing for years: the political parties of Tirajana are increasingly distant in their ideological and territorial position and the feelings of the voters of one party towards the rest are very negative. Polarization can arise in the form of an emotional response towards people who belong to groups other than those with which tirajaneros identify. Recently, the idea of affective polarization has gained strength, which responds to identity and emotional issues and that are not always associated with a division between ideological blocks. But ideology is not only reflected in more or less conservative or progressive positions, but, in Tirajana, it is also reflected in other issues such as polarization around the territorial issue, which, in the same way, has increased greatly among the voters of the different parties.
