Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez was appointed official chronicler of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and carried out interesting work investigating different elements of the identity and culture of the southern neighbors.
The ordinary plenary session of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has unanimously approved the motion through which it is proposed to nominate the Tablero de Maspalomas House of Culture, a municipal property, as the “Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez Cultural Center”.
With the death of Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez, the town of El Tablero and the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana have suffered a valuable loss. This is not only due to the personal, social, cultural, community, research and professional value that he demonstrated during his life, but also in general due to his vocation for altruistic service and total dedication, not only in El Tablero but in the entire population of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Virtues and values that he not only put into practice and reached many people, but also tried to instill in his students, colleagues, collaborators, friends and family, without disregarding his role as a precursor and promoter of genealogical and scientific research. medical that ended with the discovery of a mutation of the gene that causes sudden death in many residents of our Municipality, which has saved hundreds of human lives in recent years.
But Carmelo Pérez also developed interesting work in investigating different elements of the identity and culture of the southern neighbors of our island. The work of Escuela Popular Ayagaure dates back to the seventies of the last century and, through it, there is an important collection of information and documents about the people, customs, economic activities, traditions and beliefs of our ancestors. Documentation with sufficient value for other people to continue and continue the task of sifting, systematizing and disseminating what has been collected so far.
The accumulation of all this personal and professional heritage made our City Council, recently, decide to name him Official Chronicler, a task in which he had barely begun and of which he left us two "chronicles" published in separate yearbooks of the Association of Chroniclers of the Canary Islands. Carmelo Pérez was and is a reference for the authentic citizen that this century unfortunately lacks, committed to his reality and his time, a believer in the broadest sense of the word, a lover of the human condition, a tireless and systematic worker, a curious researcher. endowed with an enormous spirit of improvement.
Identifying the Tablero Cultural Center with the name and figure of Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez is an honor for both. It is an honor for the people of Tablero de Maspalomas who will be able to be proud for generations of having given birth to a son of illustrious values, of illustrious actions, of illustrious example. But also for Carmelo Pérez, for his family, for those who knew him and shared life, friendship and work with him. Because he felt linked to his town and participated in what was valuable and less valuable in that growing community.
