The moment chosen has been just when the courts are discussing what future awaits the cement plant owned by the Brazilian Votorantim Cimentos and the Asturian group Masaveu in El Pajar, San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Students from the ULPGC visited the plant this November with the aim of analyzing its environmental impact and the role that industrial operations play in this area, which the hotel sector claims due to the expiration of the port operations license that dates back to 1972.
The newly enrolled students of the Industrial Chemistry subject of the Degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering paid a visit to the Asturian-Brazilian plant that operates with the Canarian brand Ceisa. The production manager offered an informative talk to the students and then guided them on a visit to the loading and unloading port area, the mills, the dosing area, the silos and the storage. In the laboratory the students saw physical and chemical tests.
In April 2022, students enrolled in the subject of Technological Innovation Management, of the Master in Industrial Engineering of the EIIC, visited the facilities of the Rio and Asturian company as well. The production director engineer Juan Correa, accompanied by the maintenance director engineer, Jaime Medina, explained in detail the manufacturing process of cements and mortars, which have tariff protection.
They also accompanied the students and teachers through the factory facilities, commenting on the type of machinery used and technical details regarding its operation. Likewise, an explanation was received about the control systems implemented in the company in the quality laboratory located in the industrial facilities themselves. Of special mention is the raw materials fracturing mill, due to its high physical dimensions and electrical energy consumption.
The Brazilian Votorantim Cimentos and the Asturian group Masaveu share control in Ceisa, the main cement manufacturer and distributor in the province of Las Palmas, while Votorantim has a resource management plant in Tenerife.
