The AMTC is equipped with a System of Tourism Sustainability Indicators

 

The Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC) has launched a pioneering project in Spain, a System of Tourism Sustainability Indicators, which is integrated into the tourism intelligence system that the association already has. The vice president of the AMTC and mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, announced this important advance this Friday, during her speech at the closing of the second day of the Maspalomas Costa Canaria International Tourism Forum, held in Expomeloneras.

 

Onalia Bueno was accompanied at the AMTC table by the mayor of Guía de Isora, Josefa Mesa; and the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González. The representatives of the Association at the closing ceremony insisted on the image of unity that it transmits when making its voice heard. It was highlighted that the thirteen tourist municipalities concentrate 80 percent of the economic activity of the Canary Islands.

 

 

 

 

The AMTC launched its Tourism Intelligence System (SIT) in 2021, being the first interoperable networked multi-destination to be developed in Spain. This work tool is now completed by the aforementioned Tourism Sustainability Indicator System.

 

This project has been launched thanks to a subsidy granted by the Department of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands. This system will be adapted to the socioeconomic and environmental indicators of Segittur (State Commercial Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies) for the diagnosis of smart tourist destinations.

 

The main objective is to provide the AMTC with a system that allows monitoring the social, economic and environmental effects of tourist activity in the thirteen municipalities. The association is provided with a tool that guides decision-making and that will be shared with the private sector, facilitating the identification of areas for improvement.

 

MILESTONES

Onalia Bueno presented at the Forum the main milestones achieved by the AMTC since its creation six years ago. The vice president spoke of the first steps taken by Arona, Adeje, Guía de Isora, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán, which would be joined years later by Pájara, Antigua, La Oliva, Yaiza, Tías, Teguise and Puerto de la Cruz .

 

The AMTC was established as a contracting center in 2021, providing itself with a tool that allows it to jointly undertake projects of interest to member municipalities.

 

In December 2021, the call for Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans, financed with Next Generation funds, selected the AMTC project called 'Decarbonization of the destination. Canary Green'. Endowed with eight million euros, its administrative processing began in 2022.

 

Onalia Bueno told those attending this meeting that the last few months have been very intense for the association. Through various actions, in July it was possible to delay the application of the beaches decree, which was to come into force in August, in an effort to reach a consensus on a document that better adapts to the real needs of tourist municipalities. The association is currently working, together with the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), on the draft of the decree to regulate housing for tourist use, in order to establish common legislation on the islands.

 

The association works, also together with Fecam, to achieve the definition of a tourist municipality, an issue for which the National Alliance of Sun and Beach Tourist Municipalities is also working.

 

Another of the milestones achieved in recent years by the AMTC is having become an interlocutor for the municipalities that house the economic engine of the Canary Islands. This has been recognized by high authorities, with the meetings held with the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, being representative in this sense. The voice of the association's member municipalities has been heard.

 

 

 

 

GENERAL

 

The AMTC held an assembly this Friday in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, taking advantage of its presence at the International Forum. At the meeting, various current affairs were discussed, as well as preparation for the association's upcoming events, especially its presence at Fitur 2023.

 

A representation of the Platform of People Affected by the Canary Islands Tourism Law presented to the assembly their demand for clear regulations, advocating for social peace and sustainability. The tourist municipalities conveyed to them that work is being done to respond to their demands. The AMTC was understanding of this problem.
