The dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the ULPGC, Juan Manuel Benítez, expressed this weekend his optimism in the face of what, in his opinion, is the greatest and most urgent challenge of the Canary Islands economy: how to overcome the economic collapse in emitting countries. of tourism with special interest in the Canary Islands and analyze how the change that is taking place in the economic policies developed by financial institutions such as the ECB or the FED will affect the sector. Benítez made this consideration after the completion of the 2023th Maspalomas Costa Canaria International Tourism Forum, in which prominent foreign academics have participated, and which will host a renewed edition in 2023. "XNUMX will be a great edition because the economic and institutional agents are already meditating an agenda that, with all certainty, will be mutually acceptable to all, maintaining the priority objective of raising the level of the scientific debate on tourism that began a decade ago and generating environments of trust where alliances between public and private sectors can be discussed,” said Benítez.

Record remote audience for the Maspalomas Tourism Forum

He stressed that the Maspalomas Tourism Forum was the first event that operated remotely, generating audiences between 90.000 in 2019 and 133.374 in 2022, placing the number of views at the level of large events specialized in tourism in the EU and the US, highlighting connections. from emerging countries in tourism such as Morocco or Vietnam or consolidated ones such as the USMCA bloc (United States, Mexico and Canada) from where more connection time remains connected from universities and other analysis centers. "There are tourism faculties where the Maspalomas International Tourism Forum is very followed because all the analyzes and projections of a destination like the Canary Islands generate a lot of interest," said Benítez.

Digital euro in tourism

The president of the Maspalomas International Tourism Forum pointed out that "this technical and academic meeting of professionals from the beginning was a center for debate on market trends" and noted that November 2023 will have special relevance for the debate on the digital euro and its impact on the sector's accounts. In October 2023, the European Central Bank will have a plan to launch this means of electronic payment, which would be different from "cash money", providing one more option to pay using central bank money. In Benítez's opinion, the tourism sector must prepare for the arrival of this new means of payment.
