The arrival of the high tourist season in the south of Gran Canaria is already reflected in the refrigerators of the distribution companies of Arinaga, El Goro and Las Palmas. The Association of Refrigeration, Logistics and Distribution Operations of Spain has released the sector data corresponding to the second quarter of 2022, within the framework of its Cold Observatory, which aims to periodically provide the clearest possible perspective of the activity of refrigerated storage.
According to the information collected among its associates, the average occupancy of frozen product warehouses in the south of Gran Canaria would be above 80%, that is, among the highest in Spain, although the Valencian Community heads the ranking with the 86,9%. Regarding the average values of the activity and billing indicators, the average number of employees per 10.000 cubic meters amounts to 4,17, with 0,29 tons handled per cubic meter and an average billing of 10,33 euros per meter. cubic. All indicators increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, especially the average number of employees, with 19,48%, and average turnover, with 25,51%.
Regarding the distribution by category of products demanded in the sector, fish are in the lead with 19,59%, followed by meats, with 18,56%, and processed products, also with 18,56%. The vegetables group remains with 16,49% and the bread and miscellaneous segment, with 14,43%. Dairy products close the list with 9,28%, while pharmaceutical products represent 3,09%. The food market is in a state of uncertainty due to the unstable situation in the global macroenvironment, which has its effects on tourist behavior. Inflation and fear of geopolitical tensions will cause a reduction in consumption, preference for private labels and price wars. However, the demand for frozen foods will continue to rise.
