The Mestisay band, protagonists of the event for the last five years, have denounced political censorship by the Tirajan city council.
Olga Cerpa, Manuel González and Antonio Montesdeoca, members of the band Mestisay, have issued a statement in which they have expressed their disagreement at having been separated from the traditional New Year's concert held in Maspalomas. The band assures that this decision is due to political reasons, mainly due to their commitment and public positioning in favor of the Save Chira-Soria platform.
From the musical group they affirm that during the last four months they have tried to contact Elena Espino, Councilor for Culture of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, without receiving a response from her; something they attribute to certain tensions that arose in their last meetings due to the commitment mentioned above with the citizen platform Save Chira-Soria.
For its part, the San Bartolomé city council has issued a press release in which they assure that the only motivation to change the dynamics of the event is to revitalize it, also taking the opportunity to defend their right to innovate in the municipality.
The council has also cited as a reason to justify the change the intention to reduce the deterioration of the Special Natural Reserve of the Maspalomas Dunes, where the event was held until this year.
In the press release itself, the City Council has addressed the musical group directly, stating that their arguments “fall under their own weight” due to the multitude of occasions in which the council has had the group participate in previous events. .
For their part, the members of Mestisay have stated that, despite their displeasure with this situation, they are already working to relocate the event to another location and thus be able to continue with the traditional New Year's performance.
