More than 200 people came to the group's premises to support the candidate's appointment. The Assembly vote was unanimous.
Óscar Hernández Suárez will once again lead Roque Aguayro's candidacy for the next elections to the Agüimes City Council. This was decided this Wednesday, unanimously, by the Assembly of the group, which brought together more than 200 residents of the municipality to decide their candidate for mayor. Following the proposal made by the Coordinating Commission, Óscar Hernández had the full support of those attending, without any abstention or vote against.
And, in the words of the training coordinator, Francis González, he is the best mayor for Agüimes, “an exemplary public servant, upright, honest, responsible and good manager, worthy representative of the ethics and values that Roque Aguayro always “He has defended for the municipality.” González also highlighted the affection and affection that Óscar Hernández awakens among the population of Agüimes, due to his affable, attentive and generous character. “Everyone knows,” he stressed, “that Oscar, in addition to being a good mayor, is a good person.”
Óscar Hernández Suárez was born in Agüimes in 1962. He is a Primary Education teacher and was director of the La Viñuela School, until his political responsibilities prevented him from continuing to teach. From a very young age he has been actively participating in different social groups in the municipality, in areas such as sports, folklore, carnival or solidarity.
He began his career in the Agüimes City Council as a Councilor for Sports and Education between 1991 and 1995, the year in which he took over the Treasury, Personnel, Industry, Commerce and spokesperson for the Roque Aguayro group. Between 1999 and 2003 he combined all these tasks with the position of Environment Minister of the Gran Canaria Council. In the Cabildo he was also a councilor in the opposition between 2003 and 2007 and later, between 2007 and 2011, a Sports Councilor, standing out, among other matters, for promoting the construction of the Gran Canaria Arena.
In May 2015, he led Roque Aguayro's candidacy in the municipal elections, being elected by an overwhelming absolute majority as mayor of Agüimes, a position that he managed to revalidate in 2019 and that he hopes to obtain again, with the support of his neighbors, in the municipal elections. May 2023. He is also currently vice president of the Canarian Federation of Municipalities.
After his designation as a candidate, Óscar Hernández thanked the Assembly for the trust placed in him, a trust that he assumes with “honor and responsibility”, the honor of “being able to serve his people, first as a councilor and now as mayor” and the responsibility of "giving the best version of ourselves so that Agüimes continues to advance in infrastructure, services and quality of life for citizens." The candidate made an exhaustive review of the management of the City Council during the last four years, highlighting the work carried out by the Social Welfare area to address the increase in requests for help in the face of the economic and social crisis caused by the pandemic. He also made a positive assessment in public works, contracting, tourism, environment and clean energy, housing, rural development, sports, seniors, youth and culture, among other areas. He highlighted the excellent financial health of the City Council, its zero debt situation with banking entities, the low taxation for companies and citizens and the average payment period to suppliers, which is 27 days, one of the lowest in the entire Canary Islands. He also emphasized the good macroeconomic figures of the municipality in terms of job creation and economic activity, highlighting the strength of the Arinaga Industrial Zone as one of the main economic drivers of Gran Canaria.
Renewal
Despite the achievements made, which place Agüimes as one of the highest-rated municipalities in the Canary Islands, Óscar Hernández expressed his dissatisfaction. “We are aware of how much they value us from the outside, but we want to continue improving and moving forward,” he stated. A reflection of this desire is the renewal of the collective's graphic identity, which has been updated as a sign to "continue opening the project to the incorporation of new blood", new energies that "without losing the root or the essence" rejuvenate the project. and they will “take over to give “new impetus to Roque Aguayro.” The objective is for the group to evolve with the times and continue to respond at all times to the expectations and needs of citizens.
In 2023, Óscar Hernández will lead a new team with “new ideas and many projects for Agüimes”, with the aim of continuing the path of progress marked by Roque Aguayro at the head of the City Council. In this sense, he thanked “the support and involvement of so many neighbors who for decades have fought to support Roque Aguayro's proposal” and concluded by highlighting that the greatest tribute that can be paid to all of them is “the commitment to continue working with honesty, dedication and enthusiasm so that Agüimes becomes more and better.”
