The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, attended this morning (Tuesday, December 6) the commemorative events of the 44th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution in the Congress of Deputies, in Madrid. In statements to the media prior to the celebration, the head of the regional Executive affirmed that the 1978 constitutional text is the best example in which Spanish society and politics should be looked at in order to have high vision, move away from political tension and follow the path of progress that the Magna Carta opened in the longest and most fruitful democratic period in Spain.
Torres indicated that "those 44 years have been of democracy, freedom and prosperity", a period in which "Spain has placed itself in Europe and has defended citizen rights after a 40-year dictatorship and after a transition that was exemplary." According to the president, the Magna Carta must be “celebrated together, since it was the fruit of men and women who separated ideological issues to move towards a fundamental text that was made when we still used typewriters. Maybe that's why we have to update it, since we are in the era of digitalization and everything can be improved," said Torres.
The president of the Canary Islands considers that the Constitution is the best example of tension and those “differences that are sometimes expressed because we are six months away from local and regional elections and less than a year from general elections, but we must "to have a little more head and height of vision to remember that magnificent day when Spanish society said yes to the Constitution and definitively consolidated democracy."
