School transport employers have agreed in an extraordinary assembly to carry out a day of strike in school transport services, this Monday, January 9, and this affects minors in the south of Gran Canaria, unless it is deactivated beforehand. The decision is motivated by way of protest at the delays in the fulfillment of the economic commitments acquired by the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands. At the same time, if the Administration does not take steps to unblock the administrative-economic collapse of transport services, businessmen do not rule out toughening pressure measures in the near future, reports TV Canaria.
A proposal from the Ministry of Education regarding the economic update calendar allowed the transportation sector to agree to start the 2022-23 school year normally in the confidence of compliance with what was committed. The Administration owes the IPC clause for a significant amount of 14 million. To all this we must add that it is still unknown when the economic concepts of school transport contracts will be able to be regularized. Nor has a debt recognition document been formalized that allows transport companies to use financial products with the guarantee of the outstanding debt.
Currently, there are four school transport contracts in the Canary Islands that have not yet received an update of the economic modules. In 2023, dates for regularization of late prices are also not guaranteed. On the other hand, for 10 years, the Administration has owed the CPI clause included in the contracts for an amount of around 14 million euros.
The Canary Islands passenger transport sector regrets having to go to these extremes, but considers that it does not have the capacity to withstand the negative consequences of the Administration's internal management problems. The sector tries to maintain its activity despite the fact that the indicators point towards maintaining the inflationary situation in the medium term.
