The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, an entity jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, has spent approximately nine million euros during 2022 , related to actions under the Agreement signed with the Tourism Department of the Gran Canaria Island Council and other needs requested by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council.
These different actions are also part of the actions that the Consortium has been carrying out during the last two years associated with the strategic plan for the rehabilitation, improvement of the infrastructure and improvement of the tourist space of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, as well as the launch of the economic and social reactivation plan for Gran Canaria.
In this regard, during 2022, among the various projects undertaken, the contract for the transformation of the Maspalomas Municipal Market was put out to tender. This project comprises three phases: market expansion, renovation of the facilities, and the installation of self-consumption photovoltaic energy on the roof. The total cost of the entire project amounts to €5.987.224,10, and the first phase, involving demolition, is already underway. The construction is expected to take approximately twelve months.
Earlier this year, an agreement was also signed with Tragsa for the execution of the project and construction of the Oasis Palmeral Landscape Improvement project. This will include a public space showcasing the island's natural heritage, along with outdoor fitness areas. This initiative, which aims to offer new spaces to diversify tourism, has a budget of approximately €2.000.000 and it is estimated that the project will be finalized and construction can begin by early 2023.
On the other hand, within these actions to improve the infrastructure and landscape, the conditioning of the Playa del Águila parking lot is also being developed for about 227.102,80 euros, with a completion planned in the first months of next year.
Collaborations with the City Council on supplies and services
In collaboration with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, several investments have been made, including the tender for the supply of sun loungers and parasols, estimated at around €600.000, with delivery expected in the first months of the year. Additionally, there is the targeted environmental improvement of Tony Gallardo Park, which includes services such as pruning palm trees along the pedestrian path, pruning and removing all vegetation, eliminating invasive plant species, and removing algae and silt from the bottom and surface, among other tasks. The aim of this project is to improve and clean the water's surface and banks, at a cost of approximately €59.700, including the replacement of the hydraulic system.
Following this same line of collaboration between the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium and the City Council and Island Council of Gran Canaria, the second extension of the contract for the rental supply of the Christmas lights has also been resolved for approximately 185.098,57 euros.
Other actions
The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium has finalized the project for the last phase of the Meloneras Promenade, located closest to the Maspalomas Lighthouse. This phase aims to complete the renovation of the entire avenue, which was carried out in previous years at a cost of one million euros. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Gran Canaria Department of the Environment, the Consortium is currently designing signage for the dune area.
For Samuel Henríquez Quintana, first deputy mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and councilor responsible for the Maspalomas – Gran Canaria Consortium, “we are facing a determining entity for the municipality. During this term we have been able not only to execute an investment plan of more than 10 million euros, but we have transformed the Consortium from within, increasing its budget, increasing its staff and, shortly, changing our headquarters which, without a doubt, ", will give more relevance to an entity that will be decisive in the future of San Bartolomé de Tirajana."
For her part, the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and president of the Consortium, Concepción Narváez Vega, makes “a very positive assessment of the result of the work and the effort of having taken over a practically abandoned organ, and that in this mandate we have been able to "reactivate, provide it with personnel and sufficient financial resources to be able to reactivate our tourist destination Maspalomas Costa Canaria."
