The best oil from Gran Canaria is in Santa Lucía

Burro Safari Las Tirajanas stands out as the best oil on the island after the VII Official Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition of Gran Canaria.

 

 

The Minister of Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty, of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Miguel Hidalgo, awarded this Friday to Burro Safari Las Tirajanas, extra virgin olive oil of Satauteño origin. Since the contest was held for the first time in 2012, the expansion of olive cultivation in Gran Canaria is notable, with 15 oil mills and 5 bottling plants.

 

Adverse meteorological phenomena were the protagonists in this edition of the contest, since the haze and heat directly affected the cultivation of the oil, preventing many local oil mills from being able to produce the product. The extra cost in production was also an obstacle for many farmers, since in the middle of last year it was recorded an increase in 60% in costs due to inflation.

 

Experts define the award-winning product as “a greenish-yellow oil with very marked density, fruity and sweet, with green notes of grass, almond and apple”

 

Oil mills of Telde and Valsequillo shared the second and third prizes worth 500 and 300 euros respectively, with the oil of Satauteño origin being the winning product, awarded with 2000 euros.
