Juan Grande: Endesa rehearses what an emergency would be like

Yurena Vega Monday, January 16, 2023

Endesa has developed a simulation at the Juan Grande power generation plant, in the south of Gran Canaria, to review the occupational risk prevention and supply security plans. It was about a fuel spill to see the reaction of emergency teams to put out an alleged fire in a warehouse. The neighbors were informed by the company days before to avoid scares in the area as well as impact on the island's tourism.

Technicians at the Endesa plant in Juan Grande have recreated a fire. At the end of the incident, which lasted about two hours, the development of this rescue maneuver was analyzed, identifying the best practices, as well as the possibilities for improvement that occurred during the execution. With the fire drill, the activation of the Internal Emergency Plan of this facility has been supervised. During the operation, when the staff has detected the risk in the facility, the alarm received by the Control Center has been activated. Afterwards, the head of Intervention and the head of Emergencies were notified.

Endesa periodically carries out drills to guarantee the correct implementation of the Self-Protection Plans at the company's facilities in the south of Gran Canaria. In a drill that took place some time ago, the test simulated a fuel spill in the area where the tanks are located and a fire in the fuel tank discharge. Immediately, those responsible activated the corresponding alarms and organized emergency intervention groups, cooling the tank with water and putting out the fire with foam from a fire truck. Care was also simulated for an injured person who was removed from the area and treated by the first aid team.
