The project aims to promote energy communities in public and private spaces of the ravine, promoted by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Island Energy Council
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria, through the Insular Energy Council, has presented the 'GC-505' project in the Barranco de Arguineguín, more specifically in the area of the Philippines.
The 'GC-505' project has been carried out by the Office of Community Transformation and Energy Transition in the areas of the ravine that are favorable for the creation of energy communities. The purpose of this project is to convert the population centers along the ravine into 100% sustainable, that is, energy self-sufficient. Previous studies carried out by the Office show a consumption of approximately 3MW and the photovoltaic potential has already been located in both public areas and homes.
Along these lines, the Insular Energy Council has participated in a meeting in the area of Las Filipinas together with the community of neighbors, the Councilor for Public Works of the Mogán City Council, Ernesto Hernández and the Insular Water Council.
At the meeting, the Council's intention to deploy a fast charger for electric vehicles and several semi-fast vehicles in the ravine was explained to the residents, first of all. On the other hand, the characteristics of an energy community were explained, how it would work in the area and the steps they must follow, in addition to resolving their doubts about this project. The receptivity of neighbors was very high and the Insular Energy Council has already begun to receive information about private consumption in said neighborhood, a necessary requirement to adapt the project to the reality of the area.

The technical coordinator of Economic Development, Energy Sovereignty, Climate and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Raúl García Brink, highlighted that “the Arguineguín ravine is not only going to become the green heart of the island of Gran Canaria due to the El Salto de Chira but our objective is for it to be an example of energy self-sufficiency and a well-kept landscape capable of establishing population in the territory.”
Collective self-consumption is formed by a group of consumers who are fed, in an agreed manner, with electrical energy from production facilities close to the consumption facilities and associated with them within a range of 2 kilometers. In the case of The Philippines, and taking into account the previous study mentioned, the neighborhood is made up of approximately 400 inhabitants, in which 70 homes could give up their roofs to install photovoltaic panels and around 220 houses could be supplied with that energy.
In this way, neighbors could enjoy fair and easy access to local renewable energy resources and other energy or mobility services, as well as greater control and responsibility for self-provision of the community's energy needs. It is an investment opportunity for citizens and local businesses to create income that is generated and remains in the community through the integration of renewable energy through demand management. All this also associated with environmental and social benefits.
The study collects data from other areas such as Soria, Barranquillo Andrés, El Caidero, Cercados de Espino, El Horno, Los Peñones, El Sao, El Vento and Las Crucitas.
People interested in offering their data to the Insular Energy Council to begin the study of their home as a candidate to be part of an energy community, may send their documentation to the email ppgad@pucrs.br or make an appointment with the office on Avenida de la Feria 1, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
