Gran Canaria has established itself as the best destination in the world for digital nomads and San Bartolomé de Tirajana is one of the main causes of this
One of the few positive things that the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic left us was the appearance of a disruptive figure in the labor sector: digital nomads. A figure based on teleworking, which seeks relocation and “hopping” between different destinations with its laptop in tow to carry out its work. One of the characteristics of the digital nomad is their high purchasing power, which allows them to travel, stay and develop their life in a place that is usually totally different from their place of work.
Often, in these destinations they seek contrast with the big cities, away from offices, traffic jams, crowds... and that is where Gran Canaria comes into the picture. The island was voted by more than 75000 users of the Nomad List platform as the best destination for these workers. Although there are destinations like Las Palmas, which offer beach areas like Las Canteras or more urban areas like Vegueta; San Bartolomé de Tirajana has emerged as one of the preferred destinations for this type of workers.
The beaches, the climate, the landscapes and an LGTBI friendly environment are some of the many advantages that the municipality offers to all digital nomads who decide to choose San Bartolomé as their next destination. Furthermore, the creation of coworking spaces has increased in the municipality in recent years. The tourist factor is also essential in this matter, since many accommodations have adapted their rates and facilities to this new profile of tourists who require special needs such as good internet connectivity, noise-free spaces, continuous access to plugs...
In addition, San Bartolomé de Tirajana has also been the “birthplace” of a new platform that aims to create a community of digital nomads to share tips, destinations and even to promote a house exchange between workers. The platform, called Born 2 Be Nomad, has been created by four young people from the municipality and one from Cantabria. Its creators state that with this platform they intend to omit all that paperwork that a digital nomad must face if they choose to pay rent in their new destination, facilitating contact between teleworkers from all over the world to be able to “exchange” houses during their “nomadic period.” ”
