The government contemplates the possible privatization of the control tower of the Gran Canaria airport, as well as those of Tenerife and other national aerodromes
The control tower of the Gran Canaria airport could be privatized in the medium term. This is the intention of the Government of Spain, which defends this plan by ensuring that the main objective is to improve efficiency and the services provided. Along with the control tower of the Gran Canaria airport, those of the two airports of Tenerife, Málaga, Santiago de Compostela and Bilbao, would also be privatized.
The executive's intention to privatize more control towers nationwide coincides with the current strike between some of the already privatized towers, managed by Saerco and FerroNats. Currently, the management of the Gran Canaria airport control tower belongs to Enaire, a public company affiliated with the Ministry of Transport.
This intention to privatize control tower services at various national airports may provoke strikes, something that would cause a considerable “jam” of passengers in the terminals between delayed and canceled flights. It is also worth highlighting the large tourist movement of the airports in which privatization is intended to be carried out; especially in the Canary archipelago, where the three main airports are within that plan to release the services of their control towers.
