Recognition of five leading women of San Bartolomé de Tirajana at the inauguration of Avenida 8 de Marzo

 

“Emotion, recognition and vindication.” This is how the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Conchi Narváez, defined last night the act of changing the name of Avenida Alféreces Provisionales to Avenida 8 de Marzo, which begins a series of actions promoted by the Department of Equality on the occasion of the commemoration. of International Women's Day.

 

 

 

 

Annex II of Playa del Inglés became the stage that featured five women who are leaders of the municipality in the defense of women's rights and for their own path in life. 

 

“We have been providing visibility for years and committing to guarantee compliance with the equal rights of women and men. Today, in addition, we add a double objective achieved: To value their vital and professional career, as well as comply with the so-called Historical Memory Law regarding the nomenclature of our streets. 

 

For her part, the Councilor for Equality, Irasema Hernández, who received numerous congratulations, including that of the first mayor, for this social initiative that brought together some two thousand people, highlighted “our commitment to guarantee that the rights of the woman, whatever her age, condition or social level. And that defense is reflected in tributes like today's.”

 

Five women, five lives

 

The five women honored, some of them did not expect it and it was a real surprise and joy, were:

 

 

 

 

Mabel Martinengo Rodríguez, an employee of the Department of Equality since 2004, has been the public face of this municipal department for almost 20 years. "A tireless worker and fighter for women's rights, she is a true role model in public service within our administration," Narváez stated.

Nery Pérez Rodriguez. A leading woman in the world of communication, Nery took over Radio Faro, a family business in 2013 after the death of her father, thus becoming the first and only female director of a leading media outlet in our municipality. “A woman who has always positioned herself in a largely masculinized sector, with equality as her flag and her clear ideas,” said Hernández. 

Omayra Cazorla. Stand-up comedian and actress residing in our municipality, she began in the world of comedy by chance in 2018. Her self-confidence and closeness have positioned her as the leading comedian on our islands, being the most followed on social networks.

 

Carmen Gil Díaz. In the 70s, when the Maspalomas festivities arrived, she encouraged neighbors to participate in the celebrations. A woman who thrived during difficult times, she was always willing to help the town. They called her the taxi driver because whenever anyone needed a ride, she was always ready to provide one. A resilient woman, she had 12 children, 25 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Margarita Cabrera Betancor. Fighting woman. She raised 14 children while she dedicated herself to field work. She was a reference in the work of the primary sector in our municipality, since she dedicated herself to the land, the animals and the production of cheese. A woman who symbolizes the hard life path of dozens of women in our municipality.

 

The cherry on top of this unforgettable night was provided by performers such as Soraya, Cristina Ramos, Vicco, Laura Márquez, as well as comedians Omayra Cazorla, and television star Yanely Hernández, who hosted the event.
