Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, March 3, 2023.- The 12th edition of the Primavera Sur Crafts Fair, organized by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Fedac, started today in the gardens around the Maspalomas Lighthouse, with the participation of 68 artisans from the Island who will offer visitors a wide sample of the creations of 26 typical crafts of the Archipelago until next March 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 19:00 p.m.
This edition has the collaboration of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council for logistical issues, as on previous occasions. In this case, it will offer a live demonstration that will take place at the Faro Ethnographic Center in Maspalomas. There, every day, an artisan from 10:30 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. will be teaching the public the different techniques of traditional crafts such as pottery, cane basketry, palm basketry, cutlery making or weaving.
Last year the Fair already returned to pre-pandemic numbers, exceeding the Council's investment in benefits. And that is what is expected in this edition that was inaugurated by the president of the Cabildo, Antonio Morales, accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Crafts and Commerce, Minerva Alonso, and the first deputy mayor of the southern municipality, Samuel Henríquez, along with others. councillors, since the objective is none other than to support the artisans who find in these spaces a unique opportunity to publicize their work, make new contacts and make themselves known to the citizens, in short.
“Fedac is committed to continuing to visualize and support the commercialization of artisan products, and needs the collaboration of the entire local population and on this occasion especially tourists to be able to keep its workshops active and ensure the survival of the trades, which is "At the end of the day, the cultural heritage of all Gran Canarian people," declared the president, who had the opportunity to visit the different exhibitors in which, as he highlighted, tradition and design are combined while appreciating the sensitivity and exclusivity that the artisanal elaboration to each product.
Spaces for crafts
The Fairs are small spaces of time that allow the artisan to abandon his workshop and other obligations and dedicate himself to direct sales. They also promote direct producer-buyer contact, facilitating orders and the presentation of new products. In addition to the Fairs, the sector has the Fedac craft stores, located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in the Faro Ethnographic Center of Maspalomas, which allow it to have a point of sale throughout the year. There are also tutorials in the virtual environment and face-to-face courses “because we are committed to ensuring that the product is sold with a seal of quality and that it transmits part of our heritage and our culture,” declared the counselor.
