San Roque University Hospitals, pioneers in Traumatological surgery in the Canary Islands

Last February, the first bilateral hip replacement surgery via direct anterior approach was carried out with complete success in the Canary Islands, occupying a place among the five national public and private hospitals that perform this intervention.

In traditional surgery, one hip is operated on and after a period of between six and twelve months, the patient undergoes the same procedure to operate on the second hip. This entails several months of using crutches, pain in the hip that has not yet been operated on, and two surgical interventions, which greatly lengthens the recovery process and improves the patient's quality of life.

The bilateral hip prosthesis surgery through the direct anterior approach (complete hip prosthesis in a single surgery) was led by Dr. Edwin Pantaleón, head of the Traumatology service at HUSR and international trainer of this direct anterior approach technique: “The The patient undergoes a single surgery, a single admission, anesthesia and rehabilitation, so in about three months he is returning to his normal life, resolving the patient's situation without having to undergo two processes and without having to worry about returning. to enter the operating room.”

The first patient operated on with this technique in the Canary Islands is 52 years old and suffered from a dysplasia problem that caused disabling pain, which affected his quality of life and his family environment. After surgery, the patient began to walk within 48 hours, even without crutches and feeling a great improvement in his movements and daily routines.

“It's been about a month and I can guarantee that said intervention and postoperative period have been a success. I want to thank Dr. Edwin Pantaleón Rodríguez for his professionalism, as well as that of his entire team, and thank him for the care received at San Roque University Hospitals,” comments José Juan, the patient who underwent surgery.
