The Diginnova program exceeds all forecasts in its first year

 

The Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the university foundations of both provinces, articulated this ambitious program for the transformation of the Canary Islands labor market and the job placement of people with university degrees or higher vocational training, through which more More than 800 people have received a month of intensive training in innovation, digitalization or sustainability processes. Subsequently, more than half have been able to apply what they learned and continue training in companies in strategic sectors for the Canary Islands, with fully paid non-labor internship contracts, which help companies transform their market models to be more competitive.

 

Today, the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, participated in the closing of the program by the Las Palmas University Foundation (FULP), which has far exceeded the expectations created. Of the 400 people in initial training, more than 600 have been reached and, of them, 457 have exceeded 150 hours of training. In addition, 245 internship contracts have been signed, when 225 had been scheduled, thanks to the high demand for young talent from 241 companies in the Canary Islands productive fabric.

 

 

In his speech, the president highlighted above all “the high quality of the program which, together with the basic training that they already brought from their university or vocational training, has resulted in one in every five participants receiving an offer of work of his company, despite the end of government aid.” In this sense, Torres highlighted the “imperative need to conserve this talent, detect it, promote it, retain it and even attract Canarian talent from abroad, for which we are already working on a Canarian Talent Strategy, which, in collaboration with all economic agents and training, research and innovation systems, allows us to have a fully operational roadmap to achieve this.”

 

For her part, the Minister of Economy, Knowledge and Employment, Elena Máñez, highlighted the high presence of women in the program "who occupy around 57% of the positions, both in training and contracts in companies, which demonstrates the female interest in being at the forefront of change and the transformation of the productive system, paving the way in the major axes on which the future of the Canary Islands is built, such as innovation, digitalization and sustainability and which is something necessary in the International Women's Day, in which we see how, for example, of the more than 27.400 ICT jobs in the Canary Islands, only 3.000 are occupied by women." For the counselor, who praised the management of the FULP and the commitment of the business community to get involved in such an innovative program, “the high demand reflects the success of promoting policies that adapt at all times to the specific needs of the productive fabric and that, In this case, it was the need to have trained professionals to accompany companies in their transformative processes.”

 

The rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lluís Serra, highlighted the wide variety of qualifications of the program's promoters and pointed out that “we are fully aligned with the conclusions of this project and in fact our new Map of Degrees are in the line of progressively adjusting to the demands that the market itself has, such as those related to Business Management, Tourism, Engineering... and we are going to enhance them and provide light" and he went into depth that "to prepare this Map of Degrees we have done almost 40.000 interviews, of which more than 1.000 are with businessmen. Many of the new degree offerings that we foresee in the coming academic years have been agreed upon with them.”

 

Alberto Cabré, president of the FULP, delved into this collaboration between academic institutions and the productive fabric and recalled that “the FULP has been training in innovation for 15 years and this program has allowed us to train more than 600 university graduates and FP, with which we have been able to unite them with the Canarian SMEs and micro-SMEs, which above all need digital competence processes", which is why he encouraged the youth to study and greatly enhance their knowledge in these digital and innovative competences "which are also the basis of the sustainability of our society.”
