The “Liberty Girl”, a sculpture that is already recognized throughout practically the entire island, has revolutionized social media users after a modification in its appearance
Some users had already expressed their concern days earlier about seeing the well-known "Freedom Girl" statue in Vecindario fenced off and looking "worn out" due to its lack of paint. Twitter users didn't miss this opportunity to showcase their wit; some joked that she was having her diaper changed, that she had been arrested, or that she was going to be sent to daycare; others even threatened to leave the country if anything happened to the girl.
But after several days of uncertainty, this week the reason why the curious statue located in the Parc de la Masía Catalana was fenced off was finally revealed: it was getting a "makeover." A user shared a snapshot of the sculpture on Thursday with a revamped look, completely repainted and sporting a new pink hair color. Once again, Twitter users didn't miss the change, and while some were delighted to see that the statue, a favorite of many, had a new image, others used humor and came up with their own theories about why "the girl" had dyed her hair. Some even saw a resemblance to Hasbulla , the young Russian man with achondroplasia who has become a hit with his humor on TikTok, where he has amassed more than four million followers.
However, despite the humor and the “good vibes” that there is around this sculpture now, its beginnings were quite stormy and gave the previous mayor of Santa Lucía, Dunia González, some headaches. After its inauguration in 2015, many neighbors expressed their rejection of the appearance of the statue, which they called ugly and unnecessary. The PSOE of Santa Lucía, in response to these complaints, requested in writing from the first mayor information about the award procedure, the symbology of the work or the total cost among other issues.
Dunia González responded by stating that the work was carried out by a municipal official with the category of sculptor, who symbolized freedom and that the total outlay was 4000 euros. The mayor's official response did not convince the socialists, since they considered that it did not go into details about the award criteria or provide information about derived costs such as transportation, materials or installation.
Be that as it may, after more than 7 years “watching over” the Masía Catalana Park, “The Neighborhood Baby” (as many have baptized the sculpture) has earned the affection of the neighbors and, after its change of look, it seems that they have many years left between them.
