The 16th edition of the International Seminar on Sustainable Regions returns on March 29 and 30 to the Federico García Lorca Theater in Ingenio, where a dozen internationally relevant speakers will present their experiences in different areas of sustainability and the development of renewable energies.
With 15 editions behind it, the International Seminar on Sustainable Regions has become “an important pillar” for the Commonwealth of the Southeast, because “it helps us learn about experiences on sustainable development and the use of natural resources that are developed in other places in the world,” said the president of the municipal entity and mayor of Ingenio, Ana Hernández, during the presentation of the sixteenth edition of this meeting. In addition, she assured that these sessions allow us to "share the work that the Commonwealth does in this field, contribute ideas to the world, from this part of the planet, and know that we are on the right path to combat climate change."
In short, it is about continuing to deepen the commitment assumed by the Commonwealth of the Southeast since its inception "to take advantage of the meteorological conditions we have," said the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, who recalled that, years ago, the Commonwealth It has already been awarded for its commitment to desalination. The International Seminar on Sustainable Regions was born in 2006 with the purpose of drawing attention to the need to undertake actions, policies, strategies and also citizen awareness, to incorporate sustainability in all areas of life. Today, Ingenio, Agüimes and Santa Lucía have managed to consolidate this event as one of the most relevant on the international scene in terms of sustainability, renewable energies and climate change.
The Seminar will begin on Wednesday, March 29, at 17.00:XNUMX p.m., with the official opening by the president of the Commonwealth of the Southeast and mayor of Ingenio, Ana Hernández, and the mayors of Agüimes and Santa Lucía, Óscar Hernández and Francisco García . Subsequently, Elena Proietti, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will speak about Renewable energies and human rights: a new future, and Manuel Maqueda, professor of Applied Circular Economy and Regenerative Economics at Harvard University, will offer his look at the world from the point of view of an 'eco-islander'.
Wednesday's day will end with a round table moderated by Carmelo di Bartolo, architect, industrial designer and teacher at several universities, who for years has been a regular collaborator of the Sustainable Regions Seminar.
On Thursday, March 30, the head of the Water Department of the Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC), Baltasar Peñate, will open the session, explaining the current situation and the challenges faced by desalination with renewable energy. The FOWCA Project and the future of offshore wind will also be discussed. It will be done by Sergio Auffray, responsible for Renewable Development in the Canary Islands, who will give way to the scientific director of the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER), Nemesio Pérez, who will explain the risks and opportunities of volcanoes.
Subsequently, Giulio Vinaccia, design consultant for UNIDO and other United Nations agencies, will talk about Design as a tool for Sustainable Development. Next, one of the highlights of this edition of the seminar is the intervention of Elena López Gunn, director and founder of Icatalist, who has collaborated with UNESCO and FAO in various projects on sustainability and will speak on Adaptation to climate change and sustainability.
To close this edition of the seminar, the industrial engineer and former ULPGC professor, Roque Calero, closely linked to the Seminar since its inception, will moderate a round table in which the afternoon speakers will participate.
