The German union Verdi has called new strikes at the main German airports for this Friday, something that will affect one of the main tourist markets on the islands.
The airports of Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Cologne and Düsseldorf will suffer strikes this Friday due to the mobilizations called by the Verdi union due to the lack of agreement with the Federal Association of Aeronautical Safety Companies due to the payments of overtime and night shifts as well as weekends and holidays. Verdi claims that they have been negotiating these improvements since 2013 and that they have never reached a successful conclusion.
As reported by Maspalomas24h, the mobilizations began in February and Christine Behle herself, vice president of Verdi, did not rule out calling another similar strike in the following weeks if the negotiations did not progress. The first strikes in February occurred at the airports of Munich, Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Hannover, affecting nearly 300.000 passengers.
From the airports affected by the strike there are 18 scheduled flights to the archipelago, 19 if we count a flight to Gran Canaria from the Colonia airport early on Saturday, when there are also some confirmed cancellations at that same aerodrome. According to the programming offered by the airports, of those 19 flights to the Canary Islands, only three have been canceled for now; one from Colonia to Tenerife and two from Stuttgart to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The rest of the flights to the islands maintain their stipulated schedule, but the airports have recommended being in contact with the airlines due to possible changes in the coming hours. Düsseldorf is the airport with the highest number of trips to the archipelago this Friday with a total of nine, of which none have been canceled at the moment.
