“From my living room, I could see the flashes of flames and smell the burning; it was quite frightening,” commented a neighbor from the building located directly across from the scene. No one was injured; only the vehicle was damaged, and the fire was extinguished by firefighters from the Gran Canaria Fire Consortium after a swift intervention that prevented the situation from escalating.
Neighbors who witnessed the incident said they were frightened because the car fire occurred at the foot of an electrical tower. “You see those flames so close to the tower and you think you’re going to lose power or that the fire could get worse,” said another resident of the building next to the scene. Despite the neighbors’ fears, the electrical tower, protected at its base by steel plates, showed no damage after the incident.
The cause of the fire is unknown; But, according to the neighbors' version, the flames came from the hood and the car was stopped at a yield in the middle of the road, which seems to indicate that it was a mechanical failure that ended up with the car in flames. The Gran Canaria Fire Consortium acted effectively both in extinguishing and removing the car.
