The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has hired the services of a company to catch foolish pigeons due to the damage they cause to public services in the south of Gran Canaria. In this way, the south of Gran Canaria has declared war on its pigeon population, after hiring a company to trap these birds using a pneumatic device that expels a large net, to later gas and kill the specimens with carbon dioxide. The execution period will be from March 15 to July 31, 2023 in the main areas of the municipality with the highest concentration of pigeons: San Fernando de Maspalomas, Tablero, Castillo Romeral, Juan Grande, Aldea Blanca and Tunte, among others.
San Bartolomé de Tirajana wants to trap and kill a good part of the pigeons in the south of Gran Canaria, after experts have warned that the population was 10 times larger than that recommended by health authorities. This measure serves to control the "plague" that is not only spreading diseases and allergies, but is also causing damage to monuments due to corrosive excrement.
The technique of this successful company consists of attracting unsuspecting birds to a small area to feed, something quite simple knowing their voracity. Once gathered at lunchtime, a large net is ejected by a box-cannon of compressed air, trapping dozens of pigeons in a single throw. The animals are then removed and asphyxiated with carbon dioxide. The cannons can be operated manually or by remote control, where pigeons do not allow the presence of humans. It can operate both on public roads and in wheat silos, food factories, flour mills, etc. In less than a second, the entire network is deployed, capable of reaching an area ranging from 50 to 200 square meters.
