The facilities of the IES Aguañac, where Baccalaureate, Basic Vocational Training and an En Clave Classroom are taught, are falling apart due to their enormous deterioration. Parents and the educational community of the center are concerned about the safety of students and teachers.

El Tablero is in danger of losing the regulated Baccalaureate and Basic Vocational Training training for the next academic year 2023-2024 due to the poor condition of the physical and electrical installations of the IES El Tablero-Agüañac building in the old Education Center. PP-AV Neighborhood Group, which in 2011 managed to get said Baccalaureate and Vocational Training training to the Board, denounces the situation. The serious condition of the equipment requires urgent action. There are no more delays on the part of the City Council or the Department of Education. The necessary measures must be adopted to reverse the neglect and abandonment that this educational center is suffering.
The lack of maintenance suffered by the institute's facilities, where there is also a Classroom in Code, is quite high and perfectly visible to the naked eye. It poses a potential danger to the health and physical safety of students and teachers.
The situation of deterioration suffered by the center has been repeatedly denounced since 2020 by the Association of Mothers and Fathers (Ampa) El Molino. Its representative in the Federation of Ampas Galdós already warned in November of that same year that “the center is falling apart with the students coming daily. The issue is dragging on and the City Council is not responsible for the situation,” he said. That situation remains the same.
Among the deficiencies reported by Ampa to the City Council and the Department of Education, it stands out that the ironwork of the column enclosures, walls, ceilings and perimeter fencing are exposed; humidity in many points, even with open hoses and without protection; broken bathroom tiles and tiling threatening to burst; defective and peeling whitewash on stairs and on many walls and also on the perimeter enclosures of the premises; rusty and broken welds of the sun protection grilles with serious risk of detachment; loose plugs and wiring; broken doors; neglected gardening; Cracked floors and unpainted walls.
The problem is quite serious and has been reported on several occasions to Mayor Concepción Narváez, and also to the Councilor for Education, Clara Inés Martel Pérez, both from the PSOE. The last time on February 9.
“On the part of the City Council and the Ministry, absolutely nothing has been done on this matter in the last four years. The lack of maintenance at the High School Institute is shameful. They are not worried that the families and young people of the town of El Tablero could be left without the Baccalaureate and FP-B courses. If the Institute is not renovated and continues to deteriorate, young people will be forced to go to the educational centers of San Fernando again. And that has economic costs of transportation and also time,” warns Elena Álamo Vega, spokesperson for the PP-AV Municipal Group of Neighborhood Associations at City Hall.
The construction of a new high school for El Tablero is a historical need and demand for more than 20 years. In the agreements that were established between the City Council and the Ministry of Education in 2011, the PP-AV government of Marco Aurelio Pérez demanded that this construction should be accelerated as a priority by the Government of the Canary Islands, because the transfer of the facilities of the Enrique Jorge should only be considered, given the needs of the neighbors, as an emergency solution and only for a short term.
Concern of parents, teachers and students
In the School Council of the IES El Tablero-Agüañac, and in the AMPA El Molino, concern about the possibility that Education could decide to close the facilities for the next school year is very high. The municipal technical report requested last February by the president of the School Council, Esther Villanueva Fernández, warns of the serious anomalies and deficiencies that the center presents.
In the letter addressed to the mayor and the Councilor for Education signed by the 16 members of the School Council, it is highlighted that the passage of years, added to the age of the construction, built in the 70s, "has become a worrying situation of obsolescence of the space, which represents an enormous concern from all points of view, but especially from that of the safety of young people and teachers who use it."
