Antonio Morales: “the Maspalomas Summer University is an entity that is “essential for the development of Gran Canaria”

Germán Santana stated that this is an involved University, which wants to cover all people, of all ages, from childhood to the elderly.
The XXXI edition of Maspalomas Summer University will offer, from June 26 to July 21, more than 25 courses and workshops, a children's Campus, guided visits to archaeological sites, nighttime astronomical observations, tastings, sports activities on the beaches , a trip to Galicia, in addition to the celebration of the Rotary International CAMP, a Conference on Astronomy and the celebration of three international music festivals.
The dean of the Canary Islands summer university is organized by the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. The poster for this edition has as its protagonist the image of the Arteara Necropolis, located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, on the 50th anniversary of the declaration as BIC.
In addition, prominent and relevant figures in different fields will participate in this edition, such as the writer Carlos Taibo; the Cuban author Karla Suárez; the journalist José Manuel Fajardo; the professor of Physiology and Biotechnology of Marine Plants and former rector of the ULPGC, Rafael Robaina; the graduate in Philosophy, playwright and performer of the Revolotearte Company and National Agriculture Award winner, Ana Torres, and the judge of the Supreme Court and president of the Second Criminal Chamber, Manuel Marchena, who will participate in the national conference organized, for the second consecutive year, by the Social Council of the ULPGC.
The presentation of this year's program included the interventions of the Vice-Rector for Culture, Sports and Social Action of the ULPGC Campuses, José Miguel Álamo Mendoza; the president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales Méndez; the Councilor for Culture and Historical Heritage of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Elena Espino Santana, and the director of the Maspalomas Summer University, Germán Santana.
José Miguel Álamo highlighted that the ULPGC “emerged in the street and everything we do has to have a positive impact on society and that is why the Maspalomas Summer University fulfills that commitment.” The Summer University manages to combine the vacation period with rest and learning, and has local talent, as well as leading names of national and international references.”
Antonio Morales stated that the Maspalomas Summer University is an “essential entity for the development of Gran Canaria. The Cabildo cannot and should not be left out of these activities that promote knowledge, information and debate on the Island and that also complement and diversify the offer offered by the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which is a tourist reference in Canary Islands".
For Morales, this summer university reinforces the need to promote continuous training and updating throughout life. “This program offers an attractive, innovative and, at times, transgressive and critical offering.”
The president of the island corporation highlighted that this initiative is part of the tourist offer of Maspalomas, which has been consolidated in these 31 years, with more than 900 activities, and highlighted the Rotary Campus that turned Maspalomas into a City of La Peace. Morales showed the support of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria to “continue advancing in all cultural and scientific activities and to be able to continue developing proposals of the highest academic level and of interest for the Island.”
For her part, Elena Espino highlighted that this year an activity dedicated to children is repeated, which will be the Children's Campus titled 'Una de Piratas' and the presence of male and female students from several European countries, to attend the classes they will teach. outstanding trumpet teachers from different conservatories around the world. The Maspalomas International Trumpet Festival, which will be held from July 17 to 23, is considered the fourth most important festival in Europe. The program also includes the Canarias Jazz & Más Festival, on July 8 and 9, and the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival, from July 14 to 16.
The Councilor for Culture highlighted the course dedicated to emergencies, the block dedicated to Astronomy and the Film and Television production course, on the importance of the Art and Costume departments. She also announced the trip that will be made this year to Galicia to discover the Camino de Santiago and thus highlight "the importance that the celebration of the Xacobeo Year has for our municipality."
In his speech, Germán Santana highlighted that this is an involved University, which wants to cover all people, of all ages, from childhood to the elderly. “The summer university of the Canary Islands is in great health and we hope to do so every year.” In this edition, the archaeological site of Arteara will be the protagonist, one of the main attractions of the cultural and tourist area of the municipality.” Precisely this year the inaugural conference will be given by the ULPGC professor, Amelia Rodríguez, who will speak about “Archaelogy of the indigenous populations of Gran Canaria”.
The director stated that the courses and workshops will have more activities outside the classrooms, with sporting events on the beaches, guided visits to the archaeological sites of La Cañada los Gatos, Arteara and the La Fortaleza site, as well as nighttime astronomical observations.
As a novelty, he highlighted that this year an agreement will be signed with the Academy of Performing Arts chaired by Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, to have the presence of professionals who work in the different disciplines of the performing arts, from film and theater, to dance and music. "Another of our objectives will be to combine Canarian talent with national and international researchers who will come to Maspalomas to participate in the program of activities, as well as confirm our social commitment to the different levels of equality and to the most disadvantaged groups in the society".
Santana announced the different venues, such as the Maspalomas Cultural Center, Carmelo Pérez Rodríguez Cultural Center (El Tablero), El Tablero Cultural Training Center, Casa Saturninita, Maspalomas Senior Socio-Cultural Center, Tony Gallardo Park, Municipal School of Music and the Count House of San Fernando de Maspalomas.

In the first week (from June 26 to 30), the Maspalomas Summer University will offer the Workshop 'Saving lives: emergencies and first aid, Fundación Mapfre Canarias', Course 'Basic spatial analysis with R and GIS', Course 'Film and Television Production. The Art and Costume Departments, Workshop on Renewable Energies and Energy Transition. CANALUZ', Course 'The essential careers that the system ignores: speaking in public with scenic pleasure and achieving an unbeatable personality', with Ángel Lafuente, and the Workshop 'Looking at the stars'.
In the week of July 3 to 7, the course 'The new future of island transport in the Canary Islands', Course 'Employability and Social Networks', Course on 'Sports and Tourism', Scape Room Children's Campus 'Una de Piratas', Seminar 'Archaeological tourism. Tools to relate tourism and archeology', Workshop 'Learn to use Social Networks and navigate the Internet regardless of your age' and the IX international CAMP of the Rotary Club.
In the third week (July 10 to 14) the program will offer the Course 'Transforming (us) Canary Islands: autoethnography as a decolonizing pedagogical tool', Course on 'Introduction to Classic and Signature Cocktails', Course on 'Possibilities' of the Theatre', the national conferences organized by the Conference of Social Councils and the Trip to Galicia.
For the week of July 17 to 21, the Workshop 'Attention to diversity. A response to families II', Workshop on 'Initiation to the LSE (Spanish Sign Language), approach to the deaf community', Workshop 'Singing with diaphragmatic breathing and voice', Course 'The construction of the new utopia of the XXI century'. The program ends with the Astronomy Conference, from July 24 to 28.
