The construction, owned by the Port Authority of Las Palmas, is the most emblematic work of those designed by engineer Juan de León y Castillo.
The León and Castillo de Telde House-Museum, on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, organizes a free cultural visit to the Maspalomas Lighthouse, which is an Asset of Cultural Interest. The building, the work of engineer Juan de León y Castillo, is currently the headquarters of an ethnographic center managed by the FEDAC (Foundation for the Study and Development of Canarian Crafts), which offers guided tours to publicize the figure of the artisan trades and their work in the panorama of the history of Gran Canaria. The appointment is Saturday, April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m.
Places are limited to 50 people, so prior registration is required at the León y Castillo House-Museum, in the San Juan neighborhood, in Telde. During the visit, attendees will be able to visit a total of nine exhibition spaces, with an understanding, not only of the world of Gran Canaria crafts since the 15th century, but of the geographical and historical space in which the lighthouse, the dunes, and the and Maspalomas pond, designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with the category of Historical Site, among other reasons due to the passage of Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage to America to supply himself with water and firewood for the journey.

The Maspalomas Lighthouse, property of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, is the most emblematic work of those designed by the engineer Juan de León y Castillo. Inaugurated on February 1, 1890, it is an extraordinary example of work well done. Without a doubt, it marked and continues to mark a milestone in the island's history, which has made it worthy of being part of the catalog of assets of cultural interest of the island of Gran Canaria. The Maspalomas Lighthouse, located on the coast of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, was the result of the urgent need to have a reliable maritime-terrestrial signal, which would channel maritime traffic in the area. After just over a century, it has become the icon of the development of the island of Gran Canaria, at all levels.
This magnificent work of engineering constitutes the civil building of greatest historical and monumental importance from Telde to the South. Its importance for maritime navigation has not decreased one bit. What's more, its signal continues to be necessary for the increasing traffic of ships that approach the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas, considered the third in Spain in volume of container traffic and a privileged place for serving cruise ships, not its industrial activity in the repair of ships and oil platforms lags behind.
