AV blows himself up in Saint Lucia

 

The electoral month has started quite busy in Santa Lucía de Tirajana. Just six days after presenting the list of candidates for the municipal elections supported by his people, Manuel Hernández, candidate for mayor of the AV-PP coalition, has presented his resignation after disagreeing with some changes in the party's list. ahead of the municipal elections on May 28.

 

 

The news began to spread by word of mouth this morning, when the expulsion of four candidates from the AV-PP list was published in the BOE, presented on April 26 under the watchful eye of high-ranking popular officials such as Poli Suárez and Miguel Jorge Blanco, in addition to the presence of Marco Aurelio Pérez, his namesake in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The four expelled were: Lucía del Pino Rodríguez Mendez; number 2, Jacinto Reyes García; number 6, José Julián Ali Santana and Daniel García Gutierrez; first and fourth substitute respectively.

 

The changes in the list raised Juan José Ramos López to number 2 on the list, which was presented as number 3 in the public event last Thursday, and advanced all positions to number 5 on the list where Eva was included Lucía Araña López; daughter of José Luis Araña, AV councilor who they tried to disapprove on two occasions in the Santa Lucía town hall for attempted assault on an official and who appears at number 20 on the Popular Party list for the Gran Canaria Council. As the second substitute on the list is Braulia Esther López Pérez, sister-in-law of the controversial councilor.

 

Faced with this situation and with rumors of his resignation growing by the hour, Manuel Hernández has stepped forward and issued a statement late this afternoon confirming his resignation as the coalition's lead candidate and announcing his retirement from political life. "These recent events have caused me to lose faith in the very people who convinced me to enter politics," the former candidate stated in his note, in which he also confirmed that there were moments of internal tension during the drafting of the list that was made public at the presentation event.

 

This succession of expulsions and resignations has beheaded a project that was presented as the most solid alternative in the municipality to the alliance between Nueva Canarias and Fortaleza, as Manuel Hernández himself stated in his statement, referring to the good electoral expectations that the surveys predicted.

 

After this shot in the foot, AV-PP finds itself in a race against time to elect a candidate for the municipal elections and the difficult task of minimizing damage at the polls after this blow less than a month before the elections.
