Who will fill the Citizens slot in SBT?

Cristian Sanchez Wednesday, May 17, 2023

The fifth party with the most votes in the 2019 elections and the key to the four-party system disappears from the Tirajan political landscape ahead of the elections on May 28

In February Inés Rodríguez, Tourism Councilor for San Bartolomé de Tirajana and member of Ciudadanos, confirmed that she would not run in the May 28 elections. A movement that was already vox populi in the municipality before its official announcement and which certified that the negative dynamics of the orange formation at the national level had extended to San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Ciudadanos surprised in 2019 by entering the Tirajan town council with 998 votes and the key to facilitate a four-party system to govern in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, thus leaving aside PP-AV, the most voted list with 4771 votes. Something that led Inés Rodríguez to the Department of Tourism, a key position for the development of the municipality. However, the exodus of militants at the national level, the use of this drift by the traditional parties (PP-PSOE) and the rise of other forces such as VOX have contributed to the fact that the oranges have practically disappeared from the national political map.

In San Bartolomé de Tirajana it seems practically impossible for VOX to enter the council and Inés herself ruled out running in the elections on the list of a party other than Ciudadanos, something she has done. This panorama leaves “a free space” in the Tirajan town council to which the minor forces intend to opt before leaving it on a platter to the large traditional parties (PP-AV, PSOE, CC and NC)

The most plausible option is that those thousand votes are distributed among the forces with the most votes according to the polls, that is, between PP-AV and PSOE. However, in the Tirajan political sphere there are two insular and smaller forces with an ideology similar to Ciudadanos that could take advantage of the collapse of the orange formation. Let's Talk Now and United for Gran Canaria, island political formations with a centrist and liberal ideological framework, opt to receive some of those votes that the oranges will no longer receive and that could allow them to enter the council and who knows, even repeat the move of 2019 and be the key for the formation of a government group.

Let's Talk Now was born in 2020 and in June of last year it elected José Francisco “Paco” Pérez López in an assembly as president of the party. Curiously, Paco Pérez himself (current head of the list of the young formation in San Bartolomé de Tirajana) was part of Unidos por Gran Canaria as vice president of the formation and even ran as head of the list in San Bartolomé de Tirajana the last two municipal elections. In the municipality he served as a councilor in 2015, when the United for Gran Canaria candidacy obtained two councilors. In November 2019, a year before the formation of Hablemos Ahora, Paco Pérez presented his resignation to the party board due to ideological disagreements.
