The recovery of rent a car, a good sign for the tourism sector

The increase in the rental car fleets that operate in the archipelago is a clear symptom of the recovery of the tourism sector, which in 2023 already expects to exceed pre-pandemic numbers.

Rental cars are a fundamental element of the tourism sector in the Canary Islands. Both national and international tourism choose to rely on a rent a car to have greater flexibility and freedom on their vacations on the islands. Although rent a cars are not only supplied by the tourism sector; Occasional rentals for work or for specific situations in which individuals choose this option are increasingly common.

However, rent a cars went through a critical moment during the pandemic. Faced with the closure of borders, many companies in the archipelago were forced to get rid of a large part of their fleet in order to survive a few months in which their activity was reduced to practically zero.

The situation was so critical that with the de-escalation and the progressive return to activity in the Canary Islands airports, the companies were unable to offer the necessary rental services on multiple occasions.

However, three years after the start of the pandemic, rent a car companies on the islands have stepped up. The Canary Islands closed 2022 with more than 10.000 rental vehicles registered on the islands, almost 12% more than in 2021, when many companies still had problems regarding the lack of vehicles in their fleet. In 2023 everything points to an even greater increase in supply, which is intended to even exceed pre-pandemic numbers.

More than positive news for the Canarian tourism sector since it represents the complete recovery of one of the tourist services most affected by the coronavirus.
