A sector of the Canarian people has rebelled against tourism. Several environmental groups met last Saturday in Arona, Tenerife to demonstrate against tourism on the islands. Many users claim that the video clip is open to misinterpretation , as it appears that one of the tourists in the video provokes the protesters before they begin hurling insults and recriminations at him. Others find it hard to believe that so many Canary Islanders are against "the very thing that feeds them" and compare the situation to Santiago de Compostela, saying, "It's as if the residents of Santiago were trying to scare away pilgrims."
Among those mentioned in the post sharing the video is the Deputy Minister of Economy for the Community of Madrid, who takes the opportunity to attack the left (the main proponents of the tourism control measures). Some foreigners have also quoted the tweet , stating that "this is how you ruin winter holidays," implying that they had planned to come and enjoy a vacation in the archipelago but, after seeing the video, will think twice.
This fact sets a dangerous precedent in the Canary Islands, a community that lives mainly from tourism and that, until now, had not had any known altercations due to tourismphobia.
