Gran Canaria closes April with a 9% increase in overnight stays and a 10% increase in turnover

 

The tourism sector of Gran Canaria closed the month of April 2023 with positive indicators, as part of the post-pandemic recovery and reactivation process, which highlights a 9,5% increase in the number of overnight stays and a 10% increase in relation to income, in both cases compared to the same month of 2022. 

 

The current situation report prepared by Gran Canaria Tourism with data from the month of April and with a statistical balance of Holy Week in 2023 shows that 295.431 foreign passengers visited the island and the accumulated figure for this year now amounts to a total of 1.367.364 passengers. foreigners, which represents an increase of 4,55% compared to April of last year and 26,3% compared to the first four months of fiscal year 2022. 

 

Germans and British top this classification, with a year-on-year increase of 26% in the first case and 31,4% passengers from the United Kingdom. The return of the Swedes is also notable with an increase in the number of visitors of 34%. The Danes also increase their presence by 40%. 

 

Overnight stays, according to the hotel and non-hotel occupancy survey in Gran Canaria, have increased by 9,56% during the month of April, with 7,7% more travelers staying. The occupancy rate by room was 70,75% and by places was 64,6%, compared to 2022, which represents a year-on-year increase of more than 3%. Spending per tourist per day, on the other hand, has increased from 126,76 euros in 2019 to 172,83 euros currently. 

 

“The tourist destination of Gran Canaria is leading the recovery in many sections, especially in days of stay and billing, with which we are demonstrating that, if we truly believe in sustainability as a conservation and social value, we should not be obsessed with the number of visitors but in making it more profitable through an improvement in the product and obtaining better results,” explained the Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo. 

 

 

He pointed out that Gran Canaria has reduced the number of unemployed in the sector by 25%, although he indicated “we are still below in this sense compared to 2019 and we must recover, together, all of these contracts to continue being the industry with the most opportunities.” generated in the Canary Islands.  

 

Regarding the days of stay, the tourism sector adds an average of 9 days. Swedes (9,51 days), Finns (9,35), Norwegians (9,28), Austrians (8,56) and Germans (8,28) lead this statistic.
