The island of Gran Canaria already dreams of the long-awaited promotion to LaLiga Santander after eight years in the silver category
Tonight the Las Palmas Sports Union has the opportunity to certify its thirty-fifth season in the gold category of Spanish football. The exciting match against Alavés (third place and also a candidate for direct promotion) is the last obstacle for the yellow team to achieve direct promotion and avoid the dreaded playoffs.
In the history of the Sports Union there have been six other promotions to the First Division. In the 50s, the yellow team achieved two promotions in the category in 1951 (two years after its founding) and in 1954. That decade of ups and downs would mark the future of a club that, in 1964, again achieved promotion that would keep them in the maximum competition of Spanish football for 19 seasons, almost two decades that helped the yellows to achieve a runner-up finish in the 68-69 season. An era marked by nationally renowned native stars such as Germán Dévora, Tonono and Guedes.
In the 70s the team achieved the historic elimination of Torino in the UEFA Cup, after coming back against Torino and defeating them 4-0 in Gran Canaria. However, the 80s were a hard blow for the yellows, who consummated their relegation to the Second Division in the 83-84 season. The pain for the yellows was even greater in the 90s, when they fell to Second B in the 92-93 season.
The beginning of the new millennium was a breath of fresh air for the yellows, achieving promotion to the First Division that would only last two seasons. The first time in the Second Division in the 2000s did not last long either, descending again to Second Division B and spending two seasons in the silver category of Spanish football.
After achieving promotion to the Second Division again in 2006, the team managed to establish itself in the Second Division, with some appearances in the Playoffs without much success and the very hard blow of Cordobazo in 2014. However, the team knew how to rebuild itself and achieve promotion to the First Division. Division the following season with Sergio Araujo as the yellow team's top star.
Today it is up to Kirian, Vallés, Moleiro, Cardona and Coco, among many others, to be the stars who, with the help of García Pimienta, guide an entire island to fulfill the dream of having their team back in the First Division
