The airline will grow on the Island with 15 additional weekly flights and routes with Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Estonia, Norway, Denmark and Sweden
The counselor highlights that this is one of the agreements with the greatest strategic value in recent years and, after the difficulties caused by the war in Ukraine, ensures the preference of the client from northern Europe for the tourist destination of Gran Canaria
The airline Air Baltic, of Latvian nationality, reinforces its commitment to Gran Canaria for the next winter season. The company based at Riga airport, which inaugurated its first route with Gran Canaria last November, will open a base at the Gran Canaria airfield to which it will exclusively assign two Airbus A220-300 aircraft, and add 10 new routes. In such a way that if last year the island destination had two weekly Air Baltic flights, starting this winter there will be a total of 17 per week. This is the Latvian company's first base outside its main area of operations.
The ten new Air Baltic routes will link Gran Canaria with airports in Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. In addition, the route to Riga, the capital of Latvia, will go from having two weekly flights to three. In total, the island destination will have 15 new weekly flights for next winter, as it will begin operating at the end of October and will market its offer from June 21.
“We are in luck. It is great news for our destiny. This is one of the most relevant operations in recent times, with a commitment by a constantly growing operator that sets up shop on our island and arrives at a key moment in which the northern European market, one of the of greatest importance for Gran Canaria tourism, had suffered as a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Now they have multiplied their offer by ten, adding thousands of new seats a week and thus confirming the enormous interest of Nordics and clients from the Baltic countries towards our destination, ensuring a greater presence of tourists from northern Europe in the next winter season”, explained the Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo.
“As we already did with the opening of the route between Gran Canaria and the capital of Latvia in November 2022, this reinforcement of connectivity with the northern European market will have several promotional initiatives in Latvia and the Baltic Countries area. ”, explained the acting Tourism Minister, Carlos Álamo. “We all know the enormous weight that this market has in our industry and the problems that have arisen in the last year due to the uncertainty created among our potential clients by the war in Ukraine and inflation, which is why we have reinforced our presence and our promotional campaigns in recent times with quite good results, since it is a market that has recovered significantly. Gran Canaria continues to be a preferred destination for the Nordic customer.”
Latvia has two million inhabitants and Riga airport operates as an international hub for customers from the Nordic countries, as well as Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
