Granca's drama: giving up playing the Euroleague

The club's president, Sitapha Savané, announced the decision citing economic reasons.

The Gran Canaria basketball club has officially announced that it will not participate in the next edition of the Euroleague. Through a statement published on its website, the Canarian team explained that, after winning the Eurocup, it had the possibility of playing in the highest continental competition, but has decided to resign for financial reasons.

After analyzing the situation and voting on the matter, the Board of Directors of the Gran Canaria Basketball Club made the decision unanimously. Instead of the Euroleague, the team will once again compete in the Eurocup.

The president of the club, the legend Sitapha Savané, stated that despite being a tough decision, it is a coherent decision and one that advocates for the sustainability of the club on an economic level since, in his own words, “going to the Euroleague “It would be irresponsibility disguised as bravery.”

The Gran Canaria club already participated in the Euroleague in the 2018-19 season, but did not obtain good results. They finished as fourteenth ranked, with only 8 wins in 30 games. Furthermore, this effort in the continental competition affected their performance in the domestic league, as they finished far from the playoffs in twelfth place, with twenty losses and fourteen wins.
