Garbage in Maspalomas: in the hands of Mexicans and pensioners from Canada

The local government coalition in San Bartolomé de Tirajana wants to immediately turn around the management of cleanup in the south of the island. AV-PP and CC are not going to wait even 15 days from taking office for domestic tourism coming from Las Palmas and the peninsular market to see real changes after the departure of the PSOE-NC pact.

The mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, in person has given instructions to councilors to review the service execution model of the contract that is managed from Malaga, no longer from Las Palmas, given that the Canarian management staff who was always aware of the municipality has been retired or fired.

The colonial company that manages all this is called FCC and its ownership is nice: 75% Mexican property of the magnate Carlos Slim and the rest, as of this June, of Canadian pensioners and retirees. This 2023, FCC has agreed to sell a quarter of the share capital of its environmental subsidiary to the Canadian pension fund manager CPP Investments for 965 million euros. The Maspalomas business in that amount is pocket change. Ferrovial sold its waste management subsidiary in Sur de Gran Canaria to the German company PreZero International last year, the owner of Lidl. Sacyr is evaluating potential buyers for its waste management and services subsidiary, Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales. FCC Medio Ambiente operates mainly in Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Central and Eastern Europe and the United States.

FCC, a construction and infrastructure company majority owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, will retain the majority of the stake in FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente Holding with 75,01%. Other Spanish construction companies such as Sacyr and Ferrovial have divested part of their service subsidiaries. According to a statement from the FCC, the CPP group, which manages Canada's state pension funds, had about C$570.000 billion in assets under management at the end of March, most of it outside Canada.
