Elmasa, the water technology management company that emerged in the south of Gran Canaria, has recently collaborated with the Canary Islands Technological Institute and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the preparation of the brine characterization study from water desalination plants. sea through reverse osmosis in the Canary Islands, during the years 2021 and 2022, within the framework of the E5DES Project, 85% co-financed with FEDER funds through the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 program.
This study, by Baltasar Peñate and Ángel Rivero, head and technician of the Water Department of the ITC and Noemi Melián, professor of Process Engineering at the School of Industrial and Civil Engineering of the ULPGC, has been recently published in the specialized scientific journal, Toilet.
The results of this study are very useful for the industrial sector and providers of technologies based on obtaining byproducts from desalination brines. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the seawater collection system used in the desalination plant and the brine that is generated in each case.
The extensive work carried out also refers to the analysis of the potential and existing barriers in the industrialization of brine recovery processes, from the environmental, economic, energy, technical and scientific perspective. The article concludes that, although a technically and economically viable solution for the recovery of brines has not yet been achieved, research efforts aimed at this objective make it possible for new technologies to be incorporated into the market.
