Maspalomas, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, once again becomes the epicenter of dialogue, peace and coexistence with the celebration of the IX International Rotary Maspalomas CAMP, which will take place from July 1 to 9 under the motto “Peace begins within ourselves ” with the presence of 30 young people from countries such as Italy, Hungary, Poland, Taiwan, Ukraine or Norway, among others. Participants will enjoy an interesting series of conferences and workshops on peace, the environment and conflict resolution, in addition to a whole series of coexistence activities that will allow them to discover some of the most surprising places in the natural heritage of Gran Canaria.
Today it was officially presented at the Casa Condal de San Fernando de Maspalomas with the presence of the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, Elena Álamo, Councilor for Culture of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Mónica Suárez, president of the Rotary Club Maspalomas, the Past Governor Andrés Barriales and the person in charge of the International Peace Camp Rotary Club Maspalomas Daniel Bazán.
The mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana Marco Aurelio Pérez highlighted the uniqueness of a municipality “that becomes the headquarters of an international meeting like CAMP and thanks to which we have received the consideration of Rotary City of Peace, with more than 120 different nationalities , ideologies, religions... living together in harmony.” For the councilor for Education of the municipality, Elena Álamo, welcoming these young people “is a responsibility and an exciting task, without a doubt they will take with them a destination of beautiful beaches and numerous cultural options in their retinas.”

The IX International CAMP Rotary Maspalomas has the support of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the International Solidarity Service of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. In the words of Carmelo Ramírez, Minister of Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity, Maspalomas becomes “a place to reflect on the great problems of this world: peace, the impoverishment of the vast majority of the population, the violation of human rights ...this CAMP is the right place for information and for reporting.”
The president of the Maspalomas Rotary Club, Mónica Suárez, wanted to highlight that “thanks to the work of the people who live here, Maspalomas becomes an example to follow for the rest of the world.” For his part, Past Governor Andrés Barriales, promoter of the designation of Maspalomas as a Rotary City of Peace, emphasized the importance of speaking to young people, “to change the world, because young people listen.” The person in charge of CAMP International Rotary Maspalomas, Daniel Bazán, concluded the intervention, highlighting the close ties that are established between the participants, “they arrive as strangers and end up being each other's best friends.”
Help in the face of natural disasters, sustainability and climate change
The series of conferences starts on Monday, July 3 at 11:00 with the participation of the former Rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Doctor in Marine Sciences and Professor Rafael Robaina, who will give the conference “Climate Change and our oceans.” Below, a luxury presentation by Yinka Babalola, Past Vice President of Rotary International and member of the Board of ShelterBox, an international charity that provides shelter to families around the world who have lost their homes due to a disaster or conflict. Babalola will speak about “The work of Rotary - Shelterbox in the face of disasters.”
On Tuesday, starting at 18.00:XNUMX p.m., the conference cycle continues with the presentation “Good sustainable practices in our daily lives” by José Luis Navarro, municipal technician responsible for the Tony Gallardo Park and the “Educating for sustainability” program, university expert in Education for Sustainability and the conference “Past, present and future of the Canary Islands Space Center” with Álvaro Martínez Villalobos, director of the Canary Islands Space Center, advisor and member of the Spanish Military Representative to NATO.

On Wednesday the CAMP conferences move to Casa África, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, led by Viviane Ogou, researcher at CIDOB, a research center in international relations. Ogou will speak on “Peacebuilding through discourse: how the theoretical framework affects strategic planning.”
Turn for sport on Thursday with the participation of Antonio Ramos Gordillo, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, expert in the fight against doping and his conference “Physical exercise as a healthy practice and improvement of the quality of life.” Next, “Active youth for the construction of a sustainable future” by Victoria Ballesteros, student and prominent environmental activist and against gender inequalities and participant in high-level UN forums among a very extensive resume.
The cycle of conferences concludes on Friday with the presence of the president of the Spanish Association of Vaccinology, Amós García, who will give the presentation "Times of pandemic, times of uncertainty." All conferences except Wednesday will take place at the Casa Condal de San Fernando de Maspalomas with free admission. In addition, participants will take part in a series of activities scheduled throughout the island, such as a visit to the Satellite Tracking station, the National Institute of Aerospace Technology located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana or the Special Natural Reserve of the Dunes of Maspalomas, where they will learn about native species of the area or a visit to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Arucas.
