Professor Rafael Robaina and the past vice president of Rotary International Yinka Babalola inaugurate the series of conferences with presentations on climate change and emergency aid

 

Today the inauguration of the IX International Rotary Maspalomas CAMP took place, at the Casa Condal de San Fernando, with the presence of the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, the counselor of Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Carmelo Ramírez, the Councilor for Education and Presidency of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Elena Álamo, the director of the Maspalomas Summer University, Germán Santana, the Governor of District 2201 Rotary Spain, José Miguel Gonzalo and the president of the Rotary Club Maspalomas, Daniel Bazán.

All of them have been able to welcome the nearly 30 young people from countries such as Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Taiwan or Ukraine among many others, who are part of the ninth edition of the Rotary Maspalomas International CAMP that will be held until next 9 July in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

 

Marco Aurelio Pérez, mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, highlighted that “we are in luck in Maspalomas, we continue working for peace through the celebration of this CAMP, both with the presence of these 30 young people from different countries and with the large and an important number of speakers whose reflection will allow us to demand and enforce peace.” Carmelo Ramírez, advisor for Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, stressed that this event ensures that Maspalomas “becomes known outside the islands for promoting peace and relationships between peoples and this is an important mark of identity. ” in a world, Ramírez assured, in which “more than 35 wars” are currently being suffered.

 

Elena Álamo, Councilor for Education and Presidency, invited CAMP attendees “to take advantage of these days not only to enjoy these conferences but to take advantage of our cultural offering.” For his part, Germán Santana, director of the Summer University, which is celebrating its thirty-first edition, welcomed them “to this island of peace, tolerance, equality, you are our future, our mirror.”

 

José Miguel Gonzalo, governor of District 2201 Rotary Spain, defined CAMP as an event for “culture, solidarity and the promotion of the island of Gran Canaria as a framework for peace. With the aim of analyzing and debating the achievement of peace in the world, these CAMPs have brought together young people from more than half the world.” Daniel Bazán, recently appointed president of the Maspalomas Rotary Club, concluded with a reflection, “the path of Rotarians is to achieve peace through friendship.” The inaugural conference was given by the former Rector of the University of Las Palmas. of Gran Canaria, Professor and Doctor in Marine Sciences Rafael Robaina, with the conference “Climate Change and our oceans”. Robaina wanted to highlight the relevance of the ocean in the balance of the planet and how human beings have altered that balance “to that we are in the current situation, because the planet does not have any problem, humanity has the problem.”

 

Among the current problems, Rafael Robaina pointed out the abandonment of areas such as Confital, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, “where it is a shame to see every time I document images that the administrations do not work for their conservation.”

 

Next, a luxury presentation by Yinka Babalola, Past Vice President of Rotary International and member of the Board of ShelterBox, an international charity created by Rotary, which provides shelter to families around the world who have lost their homes due to a disaster or conflict. . Under the title “The work of Rotary - Shelterbox in the face of disasters” Babalola wanted to send to the young people of CAMP the message of the “close relationship that exists between those emergency shelters that are provided to families in need and the achievement of peace ,” making them aware of the reality that they will encounter regarding this situation as adults of tomorrow.

 

Tomorrow, Tuesday, starting at 18.00:XNUMX p.m., the cycle of conferences continues with the presentation “Good sustainable practices in our daily lives” by José Luis Navarro, municipal technician responsible for Tony Gallardo Park and the “Educating for sustainability” program, expert university in Education for Sustainability and the conference “Past, present and future of the Canary Islands Space Center” with Air Force Colonel Álvaro Martínez Villalobos, director of the Canary Islands Space Center, advisor and member of the Spanish Military Representative to NATO. All conferences except for Wednesday's event, which is held at Casa África, will take place at the Casa Condal de San Fernando de Maspalomas with free admission.

 

The IX International Rotary Maspalomas CAMP is organized by the Rotary Club Maspalomas with the collaboration of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the International Solidarity Service, within the Gran Canaria Solidaria Program, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Maspalomas Summer University, District 2201 Rotary Spain, and the Multidistrict Youth Office
