Up to three companies have requested authorization to operate as Transport Vehicles with Drivers on the island, all of which have been rejected.
VTC companies will not have an easy time operating in Gran Canaria. Following the recent news of Uber's arrival in Tenerife and its interest in expanding to Gran Canaria, the request for authorizations to operate on the island has been constant; Up to 3400 have been rejected by the Department of Sustainable Mobility, led by Teodoro Sosa, mayor of Gáldar.
Sosa defends his position by stating that the Ministry's decision does not respond to economic criteria, but to environmental and insularity issues. The counselor affirms that accepting these authorizations would be absolute nonsense and that it would be a blow to the sector, since the requests for authorizations far exceed the number of taxi licenses on the island, which currently does not exceed 2700.
Sosa himself has made his position clear, stating that the island government, formed by Nueva Canarias and PSOE, is on the side of the taxi sector and will not allow measures that sink the sector. The Ministry considers that the number of authorizations requested to operate on the island is absurd both due to the number and the deadlines in which the requests have been made, which is between two and three months. Despite this, Teodoro Sosa once again emphasized that the decision to reject them is based mainly on environmental criteria.
