The Rotarians from the south of Gran Canaria together with doctors from Roca in San Agustín, made up of two ophthalmologists, a nurse, an optometrist and a health technician, have traveled to Nouadhibou, the second most important city in Mauritania, with the aim of performing eye surgeries. cataracts to the local population. Two nurses, an ophthalmologist and an anesthesiologist accompanied them from other centers. The health team managed to carry out more than 800 consultations and 83 cataract interventions. These were carried out at the Kuwaiti Nouadhibou Vision Hispanic Ophthalmological Center, the only center with the necessary resources in the area.

With this initiative, Roca joins the Nouadhibou Visión humanitarian project of the Jorge Alió Foundation in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Maspalomas, which for more than ten years has been sending ophthalmology teams to perform cataract surgeries and other interventions. The Nouadhibou Vision project was born after a long experience in International Cooperation, carrying out specific humanitarian actions in countries such as Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria and currently in Mauritania.

Due to the enormous amounts of sand coming from the Sahara Desert, malnutrition and the enormous amount of sunlight, the population frequently suffers from very advanced cataracts that lead to blindness, but which in most cases are operable. . This project promoted by the Rotary Club Maspalomas has been possible thanks to the close collaboration of Hospiten Roca, Fundación Jorge Alió, members of other ophthalmological centers in Gran Canaria and the volunteer teams of the NGO Nouadhibou d`abord. This compendium of health professionals has remained united thanks to the strategies designed between the different groups, allowing cooperation and efficiency between the different management systems.

Since the day this initiative began at the Kuwaiti Nouadhibou Vision Hispanic Ophthalmological Center, people of all ages and corners of the country have come in search of a solution to their visual problem.
