The unstable situation in the African country worries the Canary Islands president, who has already put the Foreign Minister in position
The situation in Senegal has the recently inaugurated Government of the Canary Islands concerned. The social and political instability that the country is experiencing can cause a stampede of boats that end up reaching the Canary Islands coasts, causing a new migration crisis in the archipelago.
For this reason, Fernando Clavijo has contacted José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, by telephone, to convey the concern of the Canary Islands Executive regarding this situation. In his call with Albares, the regional president demanded more commitment from the Government and the European Union to the activation of the Canary Islands route.
Clavijo believes that, despite not recognizing it, the Senegalese authorities are interested in reactivating the migratory flow with the archipelago in order to alleviate the tension that is experienced in the streets of the country. Given this, the president of the Canary Islands indicated that, despite the sanctions that the European Union could apply to the African country, Senegal will not make it easy for repatriation flights to arrive in its territory.
Clavijo's claims come the same week in which a migrant died in a canoe adrift a few kilometers from the coast of Gran Canaria, where another 84 people were on board who had to be helped on the high seas by Salvamento Marítimo after spend more than a week on the boat.
So far in 2023, the Canary Islands route has claimed the lives of more than 750 migrants who tried to reach the coasts of the archipelago.
